Five years ago, I was sitting at home, feeling like I had no way of making change with my members of Congress. I was frustrated. I wanted to open up their perspectives and have conversations with them about issues I care about.
“I never thought I’d actually be able to see my representative in person,” said Mercedeh Tavacoli as she sat on a stone bench on Capitol Hill and took a breath.
This summer marks 40 years since a dozen people got together in a Los Angeles living room to write letters to Congress. The story of how that living room meeting led to the RESULTS movement of today is a long one: we couldn’t fit it into an email. And the truth is, it isn’t one story.
Before the holidays, Congress reached an agreement on spending bills and taxes and sent two packages to the president for signature. The good news is that the December 2019 deal includes an additional $239 million for global health programs and billions for housing assistance. And while the final package did not include critical expansions of tax credits for low-income workers and families, your hard work laid a strong foundation – including some bipartisan momentum – for when taxes are discussed again.
