RESULTS volunteer in meeting with member of Congress

During the first 100 days of the new Congress, you rallied new and longtime allies in the movement to end poverty. Now, we level up.

It’s no secret that anti-poverty programs have been under attack. But your advocacy is building a stronger, more powerful movement.

You helped get blocked domestic anti-poverty grants turned back on almost immediately. You demanded the restoration of lifesaving global aid, breathing life back into terminated tuberculosis programs.

Most importantly, you’ve done it by growing the number of anti-poverty allies in Congress and in your communities.

Now what we need is more. More advocates in our movement. More connections with our lawmakers.

More voices calling for action.

Emergency action to protect lifesaving aid

A series of White House actions have halted health and development programs around the world. Lifesaving programs around the world are still shuttered. Meanwhile, the Administration is moving to dismantle USAID, our country’s main global anti-poverty agency. Only Congress has the authority to intervene. Members of Congress from both parties have already spoken out, but much more action is needed. We support good faith reform efforts and have worked to strengthen USAID over many years. But stopping lifesaving programs overnight and shuttering the agency that enables them is not reform — it is destruction. Learn more about the latest updates here.

Action and Allies Campaign Resources

Our strength comes from our community. With each new ally in the anti-poverty movement, our capacity for action grows. Below are tools to help you reach out to people in your community. Outreach is advocacy. Each time we organize others into action, we build momentum to end poverty.

Congress decides how to fund both U.S. and global programs through a process called “appropriations.” The U.S. government has a role to play in funding the fight against poverty globally (like through the Global Fund — see below). Use these materials to make the case to your lawmaker for robust anti-poverty funding.

Part of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is set to expire. Congress plans to pass tax legislation to extend or update it. We know that when tax credits reach filers with little or no income, people can lift themselves above the poverty line. Use these resources to make the case for a strong Child Tax Credit (CTC) and Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) in the new tax legislation.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a critical tool that helps over 40 million people in the U.S. afford nutritious food. Medicaid is a health insurance program that allows over 79 million people to access and afford health care. Everyone deserves to live healthy lives, especially children.

Both programs provide outsized support to children and families surviving poverty. Congress must act to protect and expand SNAP and Medicaid.

The Global Fund partnership has saved over 65 million lives. In 2023 alone, the Global Fund reached record numbers of people with lifesaving tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS treatment. These diseases are preventable and treatable. Yet poverty worsens the health inequities that make these diseases deadly. Call for a strong U.S. pledge to the Global Fund this year.
