Quote of the Week

“If Congress cuts [Medicaid], residents of Missouri will lose coverage, a hole will be blown in the state budget, and the rural hospitals that depend on Medicaid funding to keep their doors open will be forced to close.”

 – RESULTS St. Louis volunteer Greg Campbell a May 7 letter to the editor in the Columbia Missourian

Absolutely not! The House reconciliation plan must be rejected loudly and unequivocally.

After months of speculation, House GOP leaders have released their reconciliation proposal—and it’s every bit as damaging as feared. If enacted, this plan will (over the next decade):

  • Rip health care away from 8.6 million people by forcing states to shoulder more Medicaid costs and other harmful changes.
  • Let the ACA’s premium tax credits expire, kicking 5 million more off their health insurance.
  • Slash nutrition assistance by shifting SNAP costs to states and imposing harsh new work requirements, pushing millions further into hunger.
  • Raise the Child Tax Credit, but only for families already doing well. Low-income families get nothing from this plan.
  • Strip the Child Tax Credit from 4.5 million American children by requiring both parents to have Social Security Numbers, even if the children are U.S. citizens.

In short: this bill strips health care, cuts food assistance, denies help to children experiencing poverty, and hands tax breaks to the wealthy. If passed, it will fuel hunger, poverty, inequality, and the debt. This bill is a disaster.

Here’s the good news: there’s still time to stop this disgraceful plan. Committee debates are happening now, and a floor vote could come next week. The more people learn about this bill, the more opposition will grow. But we must act—immediately and loudly.

  • Call your representatives and tell them to vote NO.
  • In meetings with lawmakers, tell them to vote NO on this disastrous proposal.

If we act now, we can stop this cruel and reckless bill. Let’s do it.

Keep up the foreign aid “Dear Colleague” letter momentum.

Recently President Trump released his “skinny budget” proposal for fiscal year 2026. This initial budget summary calls for an 83 percent cut in foreign aid. But the President’s budget is only a request. Congress has the power of the purse, and your advocacy on appropriations will outline what the priorities should be. Commitments toward crucial global health and global education work must be in the FY26 budget, and you still have a chance to advocate for those commitments.

House “Dear Colleague” letter deadlines are heresome today! Also, the House State and Foreign Operations Subcommittee on Appropriations (SFOPS) deadline for lawmakers to submit personal FY26 requests to the committee is this Friday, May 16. Senators are still accepting appropriations requests, and the Senate SFOPS deadline is Friday, May 23. Please make you appropriations requests if you haven’t, and then contact House and Senate foreign policy aides now to urge their bosses to sign the global “Dear Colleague” letters. Check back for deadlines and details as you ask for signers.

Meet the Grassroots Director candidates this Thursday.

RESULTS is having an election this year. Over the next few weeks, RESULTS volunteers will have the opportunity to elect a new member to the Grassroots Board. These four Grassroots Directors serve on the RESULTS Board, ensuring that your perspectives and priorities directly influence our direction. It’s a vital way we keep our mission grounded to our most valuable asset—you, our volunteers.

One of those seats is now up for election. And it’s time to meet the inspiring candidates. This Thursday, May 15 at 9:00 p.m. ET, join the current Grassroots Directors for a virtual town hall to introduce the candidates. You’ll get the chance to hear the candidates’ visions and ask questions. Whoever is elected will represent your voice for the next three years. So, please be informed, be engaged, and be heard. Join us Thursday evening and cast your vote when the time comes. Join the webinar via Zoom at https://results.zoom.us/j/98985537124 or dial (312) 626-6799, meeting ID: 989 8553 7124.

TL;DR (too long; didn’t read): Call for a “no” vote on budget reconciliation, get “Dear Colleague” letter signatures, and attend the Grassroots Directors Candidates’ Forum on May 15.
