Congress must reject White House proposals to gut anti-poverty programs across the board

The Trump Administration’s proposed $163 billion in cuts to the federal budget for Fiscal Year 2026 is unconscionable. Congress must reject these cuts that target critical anti-poverty programs in the U.S. and abroad.

Washington, D.C., May 2, 2025—Today’s proposed budget from the Trump Administration would be an assault on the health and prosperity of people everywhere. The $163 billion in potential cuts target programs that give people the tools to meet their basic needs.

“In 45 years of advocacy, the RESULTS network has never seen a budget so cruel and destructive to people facing poverty,” said Joanne Carter, Executive Director of RESULTS. “The cuts to global investments alone will produce a wave of disease, hunger, and child deaths. International assistance continues to have strong bipartisan support in Congress because it saves lives and keeps us all safer. Congress must refuse to authorize these cuts.”

“Proposals to gut health programs and housing assistance will worsen mounting economic challenges and housing insecurity,” continued Carter. “Other domestic cuts will push children out of the Head Start preschools that enrich their lives and allow their parents to work. Rural families will bear this burden unduly. The list of catastrophes in this budget is enormous and unconscionable.”

“RESULTS calls on Congress to reject the White House budget. Congress has the power of the purse and serves the people. Lawmakers must write a budget that prioritizes the health and well-being of families and communities.”
