Quote of the Week

“So every single thing, every single action that you take… is creating greater connection, more empathy. You’re actually re-mending the fabric of our democracy.”

– Community Change Action National Political Director Grecia Lima on the October 2024 RESULTS National Webinar

Double/50 Media Campaign: From despair to possibility

Thank you to Grecia Lima of Community Change Action for speaking on the October 2024 RESULTS National Webinar. She was an inspirational guest reminding us that the work we do is more than just advocating for certain policies. It is a vital effort that bridges and mends the rifts that seem to divide us.

Grecia said the voters she talks to don’t want to hear more promises from politicians; they want to hear commitments and solutions. Your advocacy helps push politicians in that direction. By demanding specifics about policies and public commitments of support, advocates move elected officials away from platitudes and into action.

Finally, Grecia urged us to remember the importance of community. That we are not alone in this movement: “It is no secret that our political system feels incredibly polarized and there are certain politicians who are wanting us to make choices that challenge our empathy for each other. The work of democracy is not just to see how many voters we actually engage. But it is how much did we actually mend some of the racial divide? Some of the gender divide? Some of the economic divide that the system is forcing upon us? Every single thing, every single action that you take – that is creating greater connection, more empathy.”

This is what RESULTS is all about. For all the legislative success we’ve had over the years, it was all built on relationship. On the idea that when we get to know people and they us, even if we disagree 99 percent of the time, that one percent is something we can build on. And that’s what our Double/50 media campaign aims to do. We are not looking to attack, but rather teach and inspire. Your media this fall can do that. You can change the narrative from despair to possibility. To that end, here are the issues you can write about to move people into action:

Please check out our new Double/50 Campaign Hooks spreadsheet. It will help you find recent media pieces to inspire your writing and help tie your letter to the editor to what’s being talked about. Check back frequently for new hooks.

TAKE ACTION: Help us hit the Double/50 by the end of the year – double our media for the year (from 300 to 600 pieces) with at least one media piece in all 50 states. You’re up to 53 pieces in 15 states (see our Media Map and 2024 media list). Let’s keep it up and ramp up the pressure on lawmakers and candidates to talk about poverty in the election. You can find LTE templates in the RESULTS Action Center and the Double/50 Campaign Hooks spreadsheet. When you do get published, please let us know in our media report form. Good luck and thank you!

Quick News on U.S. and Global Poverty

Sign your local RESULTS group to CTC letter (deadline Thursday!). Republicans on the House Ways and Means Committee have formed “tax groups” that are seeking comments on tax priorities for 2025. Help build support for ending child poverty by telling the committee to expand the Child Tax Credit (CTC) as part of any 2025 tax legislation. RESULTS is signed on as a national group. Sign your local RESULTS group on to this coalition letter today! The deadline to sign on is this Thursday, October 11.

The End Tuberculosis (TB) Now Act passes in Senate! The End TB Now Act passed out of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee earlier this Congress, and on September 19 the Senate finally voted unanimously to pass the legislation through the hotline process. The Senate bill has now been referred to the House. Over the next month it will be important have House members – especially those that have co-sponsored the bill – push Leadership, Speaker Mike Johnson and Whip Steve Scalise to have the bill be voted on when Congress comes back to DC after the election. Read our recent press release about S.288’s passage as we next urge action in the House.

Don’t let global vaccines support stall!  We are still continuing to gather co-sponsors for resolutions supporting Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. This is in advance of the full pledging conference in 2025. This year, the Biden Administration pledged at least $1.58 billion for Gavi over five years. We need more co-sponsors to the House and Senate Gavi resolutions to help us see this through. We have 33 co-sponsors on the House resolution, which is a great start, but we can do more. And we only have 7 co-sponsors on the Senate resolution. Please ask your legislators to co-sponsor the Gavi resolutions (S.Res.684 and H.Res.1286). Use our online action today to make your Gavi resolution requests.

Announcements

RESULTS calls for an end to the violence and suffering. “This week marks a sobering and horrific anniversary. One year ago, a shocking act of violence by the group, Hamas, resulted in 1,200 deaths in Israel and at least 250 people taken hostage. This was and remains horrendous. Since then, the situation has given way to an unspeakable crisis in Gaza. Offensives by the Israeli government have killed more than 41,000 people and helped create a humanitarian catastrophe that we, as an anti-poverty organization, cannot overlook.” Read the full press release.

These trainings include new and impactful research, so even if you have taken the MI training before, you’ll learn something new. And if you missed the first session you can still join (watch the recording of session one). Register today!
