On a horrific anniversary, RESULTS calls for an end to the violence and suffering

Washington, DC, October 7, 2024—This week marks a sobering and horrific anniversary. One year ago, a shocking act of violence by the group, Hamas, resulted in 1,200 deaths in Israel and at least 250 people taken hostage. This was and remains horrendous. Since then, the situation has given way to an unspeakable crisis in Gaza. Offensives by the Israeli government have killed more than 41,000 people and helped create a humanitarian catastrophe that we, as an anti-poverty organization, cannot overlook.

Among RESULTS’s top global priorities are tackling the harmful worldwide inequities in childhood nutrition and maternal and child health. We have advocated on these issues for decades. Gaza has become one of the most dangerous places on earth for children and pregnant people. Miscarriage rates have increased 300 percent over the last year. Health workers who can operate in the region describe birthing conditions that harken back to “100 years ago”. Women are undergoing C-sections in tents with only gloves, an antiseptic wipe, and a knife.

Malnutrition runs rampant, including an unprecedented rise in wasting in young children. Undernourishment contributes to death tolls for children and families as they battle disease, violence, and more. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification has only declared two official famines since its inception. Gaza is on track to become the third.

RESULTS absolutely condemns violence against all civilians and aid workers. After a year of tragedy, we continue to call for a ceasefire, now. We call for the free flow of aid and humanitarian workers. We call for the release of all hostages and an end to the violence. In the Middle East right now, civilian families are entrapped in war, trauma, and deadly poverty. Urgent action is needed.
