RESULTS Weekly Update May 27, 2025
Quote of the Week
“As the Senate is set to vote on its version of the bill in the coming month, it is necessary that we speak out against this reckless bill.”
– RESULTS Phoenix volunteer Rayna Castillo in a May 25 letter to the editor in the Arizona Daily Sun

Congress is on recess. Let them know you strongly oppose H.R.1.
After all night committee hearings, almost no debate, and crack-of-dawn votes, last week the House barley passed H.R.1, the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” (actual name). The vote was 215-214. This bill is indeed big, but it is far from beautiful. If enacted, over the next decade millions will lose all or part of their food assistance from the bill’s $300 billion in SNAP cuts. 8.6 million people could lose health coverage from the $700+ billion in Medicaid cuts (another 5 million people could lose coverage from changes to the Affordable Care Act). Finally, the bill enacts $4.5 trillion in new tax cuts, mostly to the wealthy. CBPP estimates those making over $1 million per year will receive an extra $89,230 per year. Yet, the 17 million children in poverty currently left out of the full Child Tax Credit get nothing.
This is a bad bill. And House leaders know it. They would not have rushed it through under cover of darkness if it wasn’t. Senators don’t like it either and are already planning changes.
But we the people have the final say. Members of Congress are home this week. Make sure they know how you feel about this bill. For House members, “thank or spank” them for their vote. For senators, make it clear that you oppose ANY cuts to SNAP, Medicaid, the Child Tax Credit, and other anti-poverty programs, especially to pay for costly new tax cuts for the wealthy. Voice your frustrations in lobby meetings and town halls (call their local office to schedule one). Raise a ruckus in letters to the editor, in phone calls, and in emails to their DC and local offices. The fate of the programs we care about is far from decided. Make your voice heard today!
Congress is on recess this week. Make the most of it.
Congress is on recess all week. This will be the last Senate recess until the July 4 holiday (the House will take a recess the week of June 16). July 4 is when congressional leaders want to have the reconciliation bill on the President’s desk.
Also, President Trump plans to release his full budget this week. It is all but guaranteed to include major cuts to foreign aid programs. If we want to repair the damage caused by the shutting down of these programs, FY26 appropriations is how we do it. This is why we are so grateful to RESULTS volunteers for helping secure signatures for the House and Senate “Dear Colleague” appropriations letters. These letters remind appropriators of what their colleagues want prioritized in the FY26 budget. All the letters were bipartisan with a significant number of signatures. Thank you!
The urgency is here. We must take every opportunity to talk with members of Congress. If we want a country where people have health care, food, and money in the bank, we must push for it. If we want a world where children get a basic education, enough to eat, and don’t die from preventable diseases, we must push for it.
Use this week to speak up for the world we want. Call on Congress to prioritize reducing poverty over increasing inequality. Contact your closest congressional office to set up a last-minute lobby meeting. Ask a question at a town hall. Submit a letter to the editor. Let them know what you want. See our Actions and Allies page for lobbying resources and our Action Center for email and media templates. Please contact staff with questions or requests for assistance.
