Global Poverty Campaigns Update

QUICK ACTION Ask Congress to Prioritize Global Health and Education

Got Five Minutes? Book a Meeting with Congress on Appropriations

Now’s the best time reach out to your legislators’ schedulers and arrange a meeting on our appropriations requests for FY2021. Our appropriations materials are available, including memos/backgrounders on each of our requests and the comprehensive January action sheet so that you can make those requests – hopefully at an in-person meeting – for our global health and education priorities. We also have a great explainer on the appropriations process – what it is and how it works. Additionally, we have a “cheat sheet” blog post deciphering terms often used during the appropriations process.

TAKE ACTION: Take five minutes to contact your congressional offices and their schedulers. Book meetings for you and your group to discuss our global poverty appropriations requests. You can use our new meeting request letter to make the process easier.

Got Fifteen Minutes? Start Completing Your 2020 Roadmap

2020 promises to be an interesting and important year in our advocacy work. With issues like maternal/child health and housing looming large, we want to make the most of the opportunities in front of us. Creating your 2020 Group Roadmap (formerly, group plan) is a key first step. If you don’t already have a date set, contact your group members this week to schedule your 2020 Roadmap planning session. Or, if you are a free agent, grab a copy of our individual planning sheet and create a 2020 Roadmap of your own.

TAKE ACTION: All your 2020 Roadmap resources are on the RESULTS Outreach & Planning page under “My group wants to make our plans.” Make sure you or your group have a plan to complete your roadmap by the end of the month.

Great read by Alex Counts. In anticipation of the RESULTS 40th Anniversary, check out Changing the World Without Losing Your Mind: Leadership Lessons from Three Decades of Social Entrepreneurship by Alex Counts. This book contains many charming and inspirational stories about how the author developed his skills and made a big impact as a RESULTS volunteer and legislative director – and later as founder and CEO of the Grameen Foundation.

U.S. Poverty Campaigns Update

QUICK ACTION Generate media on addressing the housing crisis

Got Five Minutes? Request Lobby Meetings to Talk about Housing

As discussed on last weekend’s RESULTS Joint National Webinar, we have bold campaign set for our U.S. poverty issues in 2020. With a lighter legislative scheduled expected this election year, we have the opportunity to dive deep with lawmakers on their views and solutions to America’s affordable housing crisis and build support for a refundable “renters’ tax credit” to help low-income families afford a decent place to live. And there’s no time like the present to start talking to them.

TAKE ACTION: Take five minutes to request face-to-face meetings requests with your members of Congress. The House will be on recess next week and both chambers will be on recess in mid-February. Customize our new meeting request letter to set up meetings to discuss affordable housing. Also see our updated housing laser talks and our new affordable housing policy request sheet. If you need assistance with your requests, please contact Jos Linn. Once you get a meeting scheduled, please contact Meredith Dodson for coaching.

Got Fifteen Minutes? Schedule Your 2020 Roadmap Discussion

What do you want your members of Congress to do on housing in 2020? How can you help get them there? These questions and more can be answered by creating your 2020 Group Roadmap. Each year, RESULTS groups around the country take time to discuss and document the goals they have for their RESULTS work. This year, we are calling it your 2020 Group Roadmap. Why a roadmap? Because to reach your destination, you need a map to get there – a map only your local group can create. A roadmap also reminds us that advocacy work is a journey with milestones to appreciate along the way. Your roadmap also helps RESULTS best support you in getting you where you want to go. So, let’s break out the metaphorical compass and get started.

TAKE ACTION: Take fifteen minutes to contact members of your local RESULTS group to schedule your 2020 Group Roadmap discussion. The 2020 Roadmap resources are on the RESULTS Outreach & Planning page under “My group wants to make our plans.” Be sure to read the 2020 Roadmap Guide before meeting – it gives you the tools to have a great discussion. Please submit your group’s 2020 Roadmap online by January 31. If you have questions, please contact Jos Linn.

QUICK NEWS ON U.S. POVERTY

Watch Video of Homelessness Event. This morning, The Hill magazine hosted a series of conversations called “The Right to a Roof: Tackling Homelessness.” They looked at how “policymakers, support services, and affordable housing initiatives can help struggling Americans transition to housing security.” Watch the video of the event here.

Oppose Roll Back of Housing Protections. The Trump Administration has proposed a new rule that would eliminate Obama Administration rules to help reduce housing segregation. Critics fear this new rule will further weaken fair housing enforcement and open the door to increased discrimination and segregation. The public comment period is open until March 16. Submit your comment opposing this regressive rule today.
