RESULTS Weekly Update October 29, 2024
Quote of the Week
“It feels like such a privilege to raise children without a struggle. With the cost of living going up as much as it has, it’s just very difficult.”

Got Two Minutes? Register for Saturday’s National Webinar with Joanne Carter and Kul Gautam
On this Saturday’s RESULTS National Webinar, we have a special treat. We are thrilled to host a conversation with Dr. Joanne Carter, Executive Director of RESULTS, and Kul Gautam, Chair of the RESULTS Board and former Deputy Executive Director of UNICEF. This is the last webinar before Election Day and regardless of what happens next Tuesday, RESULTS’s work will continue. In that spirit, Dr. Carter and Mr. Gautam will discuss how we move forward after a contentious election and how to build on our efforts to create a world free of poverty. It should be an invigorating conversation. On the webinar, we will also update you on our current campaigns and preview our post-election engagement webinar in November. Please join us!
TAKE ACTION: Register for the RESULTS National Webinar this Saturday, November 2 at 1:00 p.m. ET. Because we know many of you are engaged in election activities, this month’s webinar will be one hour. Once registered, registrants will receive their confirmation and Zoom link a day or two before the webinar (be sure to check your junk mail if you don’t see it). You can find the slides and recordings from all our webinars on our National Webinars page.
Got Fifteen Minutes? Submit your next poverty letter to the editor
We are down to the last week before Election Day 2024. We know a lot of you are busy with election activities (along with election-related stress). We don’t want to interfere with those efforts. Voting is a critical part of maintaining our democracy, as is actively engaging others to participate. Kudos to all of you calling, texting, canvassing, donating, and anything else to help get out the vote.
But we also know that the world will not end when the election is over. Regardless of who gets elected, we will have a lot of work to do. Progress requires vigilance and, while we can’t do everything, we can certainly do something.
Between election work this week, can you give a few minutes to write a letter to the editor on what should happen next? Is it cutting child poverty by expanding the Child Tax Credit? Is it ridding the world of tuberculosis? Is it ensuring all children have access to nutritious food? Any letter you write will help get us there.
TAKE ACTION: Take fifteen minutes this week to submit a letter to the editor on a critical issue of poverty. Build on the success you have already created as part of our Double/50 media campaign. As of this morning, you’ve gotten 93 media pieces published in 25 states. You are getting us closer to our goal of 300 pieces covering all 50 states! You can find letter to the editor templates and hooks for letters and op-eds in the Double/50 Campaign media hooks tracker. And please let us know when you get published by completing our media report form. Thank you!
Quick News on U.S. and Global Poverty
Urge the House to prioritize ending tuberculosis. This year, the Senate voted unanimously to pass the End Tuberculosis Now Act through the hotline process. The Senate bill has now been referred to the House. Don’t wait. Ask House members – especially those that have co-sponsored the bill – to push Leadership, Speaker Mike Johnson and Whip Steve Scalise to have the bill be voted on after the election using our online action. Read our recent press release about S.288’s passage and take action!
Push for Congress to support access to vaccines. Please help gather more co-sponsors for resolutions in both the Senate and the House which support Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance in advance of the full pledging conference in 2025. We need more co-sponsors to help us reinforce the Administration’s earlier pledge. Don’t let co-sponsorships stall. Ask your legislators to co-sponsor the Gavi resolutions (S.Res.684 and H.Res.1286). Use our online action today to make your Gavi resolution requests.

RESULTS calls to reverse deadly ban on UN aid for Palestinians. In response to the Israeli government’s recent vote to ban United Nations humanitarian aid for Gaza, RESULTS calls on Israel and the international community to act now to reverse this policy. As RESULTS Executive Director Joanne Carter states, “This vote from the Knesset to ban the UNRWA in Gaza will be a brutal death sentence for thousands of innocent people if enacted.” Read the full statement.
