Join author John Green on Saturday’s RESULTS National Webinar and invite others to join you

On Saturday, December 2, RESULTS is thrilled to welcome author John Green to our monthly National Webinar. Mr. Green has written numerous best-selling books including The Fault in Our Stars, and most recently The Anthropocene Reviewed.  He is also passionate about tackling inequity in tuberculosis (TB) treatment. Mr. Green will join us to discuss his efforts to address the injustice of TB and why it is imperative to take action now. The webinar will also include updates and actions you can take on our TB, education, and Child Tax Credit work. We will also celebrate you – our volunteers! Please join us.

TAKE ACTION: The December National Webinar is this Saturday, December 2 at 1:00 pm ET. This webinar is an excellent opportunity to introduce new people to RESULTS and our work on global health. Please send our December Webinar promotional graphic to people you know and invite them to join you for this special opportunity. Register at www.tinyurl.com/RESULTS2024.

Reminder: If you have attended a RESULTS National Webinar in the past, you must still register for this webinar to attend. The Zoom link to join will be sent a few days before the webinar.

Build the Buy-in: We are in the home stretch – time to sprint!

Greetings, volunteers! We hope everyone had a safe and healthy holiday week. As everyone returns to work this week – including Congress – this is a good time to take stock of where things are.

As you know, the READ Act Reauthorization passed the Senate by unanimous consent earlier this month. That brings us one step closer to passage and continuing to expand access to education for children around the world. The End TB Now Act is a little further behind, having not passed either chamber yet. But, like the READ Act, there is strong bipartisan support for channeling existing TB resources to those who need them most. Finally, on the Child Tax Credit, there is still support for passing a tax package this year and both sides understand that it will have to include a meaningful expansion of the CTC.

If these bills have support, what’s the problem? Time. There is no time to pass these bills in stand-alone votes, so they must be attached to something else that will get a vote. There may be several pieces of legislation moving in the coming weeks that could accomplish this, but most assume Congress will use the final FY2024 spending bills as the vehicle, if at all. Those spending bills must pass by January 19 and February 2 (certain funding expires on each date), with January 19 seen as the unofficial deadline. This is especially true for the CTC; any 2023 tax changes beyond January would put too much strain on the IRS.

This means we have precious few weeks left. Remember, none of our issues would be in play right now if not for your persistent advocacy all year long. Your lobby meetings, your outreach to congressional staff, your engaging new people to take action, and your media advocacy have kept us in this race. Now we are in the final turn and we can see the finish line. It’s time to sprint!

TAKE ACTION: Keep the momentum of the Build the Buy-in Campaign going by getting more media published. As of today, you’ve gotten 151 media pieces published since September 1. Congratulations! Can we get to 250 in 34 days? Yes, we can. If every volunteer submits at least one letter per week over the next 5 weeks, we can easily get those final 99 pieces. And those letters will make it easier for your members of Congress to reduce child poverty, prioritize global health, and expand global education. What letter will you write this week? Your hook is easy. Congress is back at work this week – time to take action on poverty. Use our online Child Tax Credit, the End Tuberculosis Now Act, and the READ Act Reauthorization media alerts as a guide. Once you get published, send your media to the relevant aides in your congressional offices (and please let us know too). Good luck!

Give to RESULTS on this Giving Tuesday!

We’re thrilled to share that a small group of RESULTS donors will match every dollar you donate to RESULTS, up to $100,000! Why are these people being so generous? With upcoming elections and deep partisan divides, 2024 is a critical year for our country and our work to end poverty. We need donor support to expand our movement and engage more people in our democracy. By matching gifts, these generous donors hope to inspire you to give, too! A gift from you today of any size will help us raise our voices powerfully in 2024. And with the match, your donation will have double the impact as we push Congress to slash poverty in the U.S. and globally. This Giving Tuesday, will you support our work to end poverty and strengthen our democracy?

Quick News on U.S. and Global Poverty

Still time this week to write about World Children’s Day. World Children’s Day was November 20, and in advance of that, RESULTS helped co-lead a congressional briefing on human rights for children. Malnutrition. Lack of vaccine access. Lack of access to education. It all affects children so deeply, and we are committed to doing something about it. Read our blogpost on this briefing and consider writing a letter to the editor on why we must act now.

Announcements

Last days to apply for RESULTS Experts on Poverty program. RESULTS is currently seeking new members to join the Experts on Poverty program. The program gathers a diverse cohort of advocates with firsthand experiences of poverty to push for more effective government policies to combat poverty. Applications are due November 30. For questions, please contact Keisha McVey.

Join Grassroots Town Hall on December 7. All volunteers are invited to a Grassroots Town Hall event for a discussion of your year in RESULTS, your celebrations of successes, and acknowledgement of disappointments as we face the year ahead.  Instead of feeling unsatisfied with plans that didn’t come to fruition, let us celebrate the intentions, the plans, and the efforts that did happen! Bring us your stories of: 1) What is one thing from 2023 you are the proudest of or excited about with regard to your work with RESULTS? 2) What is your biggest disappointment or regret from this year? 3) What is the funniest moment from this year? Was there a congressional office involved, or perhaps a Zoom photo-bomb? This event is Thursday, December 7 at 9:00 pm ET. Join directly by clicking this link.

Register for December joint policy forum. There are no monthly policy forums in November. Instead, register for our joint U.S. and global policy forum on Thursday, December 14 at 8:30 pm ET. Join us for brief updates and to celebrate what you’ve accomplished in 2023.

Join an End-of-Year Action Network Managers Call on December 6. Join us in our celebration of the RESULTS Action Networks and take back some joy and gratitude to your local Action Network. If you’re a Group Leader or a Regional Coordinator, joining this call can be a great way to show your appreciation to your Managers. All RESULTS volunteers are welcome. Join the 12:30 pm ET session at https://results.zoom.us/j/93288388695 or the 8:00 pm ET session at https://results.zoom.us/j/91531456676. It’s your choice and no registration is required.
