Mark the anniversary of January 6 with action that protects democracy

Five years ago today, a violent mob attacked the U.S. Capitol to stop the certification of the 2020 election. Lives were lost, people were injured, and our democratic institutions were desecrated. January 6, 2021, remains one of the darkest days in our history, but it also affirmed a lasting truth: democracy endures when We the People stand up and defend it.

Your advocacy is proof of that. In the face of relentless attacks over the last year, you have delivered results. You sounded the alarm on threats to Medicaid and SNAP. You pushed Congress to reinvest in global health and education. And you helped secure a meaningful new pledge to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. That is power.

Congress is back in Washington with only weeks left to complete the FY26 budget. This is a decisive moment to fund the fight against poverty. Congress must:

  • Fund global health and education programs at House levels or higher
  • Fully fund the Housing Choice Voucher program
  • Include safeguards to ensure funds are spent as Congress directs

This week, please contact foreign policy and housing aides. Wish them a happy new year and urge them to prioritize these items in FY26 negotiations. Also submit letters to the editor calling on Congress prioritize ending poverty. RESULTS staff and online action alerts are ready to support you.

As we remember January 6, let us recommit to the work that protects democracy every day. Your advocacy — your letters, meetings, and media — is a powerful bulwark against injustice and the fuel that moves our democracy forward.

Roadmap updates by January 12

At the top of 2026, take time with your group to update your group member roster as well as your congressional coverage. This will be the first phase in our goal setting for 2026. Accurate rosters and accurate congressional coverage information are like gold; they help us work efficiently, strategically, and accurately. Then later in the year, we’ll have more on next steps in group planning. We ask that you complete this first step by January 12. If you need support accessing your roadmap spreadsheets, please contact your Regional Coordinators or RESULTS Grassroots Staff. We will be happy to help.
