RESULTS Campaigns Weekly Update June 3, 2020

June 3, 2020

We Must Do Better

The killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery are the product of centuries of unaddressed structural and systemic racism – the same forces of oppression that drive poverty.

RESULTS recognizes the persistent burden of racism and police brutality, especially on Black people, including our grassroots volunteers, partners, staff, and board who are directly impacted when society fails to recognize that Black lives matter.

We condemn anti-Black racism and all forms of oppression. We offer our sincere condolences to the families of George, Breonna, Ahmaud, and so many more Black people.

But condolences aren’t enough. As advocates we must confront racism and fight to change the policies that perpetuate it.

– June 2 “Black Lives Matter | Solidarity and action” Statement from RESULTS

Here’s what you can do

Action Step #1. Read the full “Black Lives Matter | Solidarity and action” statement and review the actions that you can take right now toward effecting racial equality in the U.S. and around the world.

Action Step #2. As many white people ask themselves how they can be allies to their Black peers, it incumbent on them to get educated and find meaningful actions that do not place additional burden on people experiencing racism. Get started now by joining our “How to Be an Ally in the Fight for Racial Justice” webinar tonight, June 3 at 9:00 pm ET. Join via Zoom: https://results.zoom.us/j/390106571  or dial (929) 436-2866, meeting ID: 390106571.

Also, tomorrow night will be a caucus meeting reserved only for Black, Indigenous and people of color from the RESULTS network. This is a confidential conversation for advocates who are part of communities directly affected by racism. The BIPOC Caucus, Thursday, June 4 at 7:45 pm ET, will be password protected to provide a safe space. If you are Black, Indigenous or a person of color involved with RESULTS, please contact Yolanda Gordon [email protected] for private log-in.

Please schedule your lobby meetings for June 22-25 Week of Action. As part of the virtual RESULTS International Conference, RESULTS will meet virtually with members of Congress and their staff about our poverty campaign priorities as part of our Advocacy Week of Action, June 22-25. If you registered for the Conference by May 27 and plan to lobby, please coordinate with fellow volunteers in your state to request face-to-face meetings during the Week of Action. Find sample meeting requests, the IC prep checklist, and other Conference resources on our website. As you get meetings scheduled, please add them to our lobby meeting tracker. Finally, please watch your e-mail for instructions on scheduling a lobby prep call with RESULTS staff (the subject line will say “RESULTS Advocacy Week”) to get you ready for your meetings. Please respond promptly.

Last week to submit Cameron Duncan Nominations. Each year, RESULTS recognizes a journalist or editor for outstanding work on issues related to poverty with the Cameron Duncan Media Award. To nominate someone, send a short e-mail to Jos Linn with your reasons for nominating them and links to recent media pieces demonstrating the journalist’s dedication to poverty issues. The deadline is this Friday, June 5.

Find coronavirus resources on our website. Our coronavirus pandemic page is a great resource for you with information on conducting virtual meetings, advocating online, generating media, what’s happening on coronavirus and poverty in Congress, and more.

Join discussion on being a better non-partisan advocate. If you’re a RESULTS activist who sometimes lobbies people with different political views, consider attending our “Bridging the Partisan Divide: How to Lobby Those Who Don’t Agree with You” webinar on Thursday, June 11 at 9:00 pm ET.  RESULTS activist Jim Driggers will present highlights from Jonathan Haidt’s book The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion. After attending this webinar, you’ll come away with a better understanding of a variety of value systems. More importantly, you’ll gain some tips to help you lobby others more effectively. Join here with meeting ID 821 9427 5109. Password: 690480.

Receive action alerts via text. We are setting up a system to send some of our action alerts via text. If you’d like to receive text action alerts, please text RESULTS to 50457 to sign up for text action alerts.
