Engaging Other Community Leaders in our Child Vaccine Work
Every RESULTS group across the country is unique. Some of you are in urban centers, others out in the 'burbs, and still others in a more rural setting. Yet one thing we all have in common is that we have grasstops champions in our communities. Our campaign to support Gavi, The Vaccine Alliance, is an excellent time to take the critical steps to establish/enhance these relationships with people who possess political clout and who can help your group influence legislators and the media. We are creating a list of these potential grasstops champions that is seemingly endless, but here are a few examples of people to whom you could reach out:
- Head of the local health department (he/she can introduce you to other key staff, like the head of the immunization program)
- Local politicians
- Clergy members
- Head of the State immunization program (for those in capital cities. He/she can introduce you to other key, community players)
- Service groups like Rotary and the Kiwanis
Here is an even longer list of potential grasstops champions is here for your use. And for tips on how to take those first steps, take a look at our “Nurturing Your Grasstops Champions” guide or tips from our September 2014 support/training call.
I am looking forward to hearing about your group and helping you explore new and/or nurturing existing grasstop connections. Contact me with your questions. Or join our discussion group. Sometimes all we need is a little nudge or inspiration to pick up the phone and invite your grasstops champions to meet with you for 15 minutes over their coffee break. Other times we need a bit of inspiration to find new connections. It may take some searching, networking, and some “being in the right place at the right time,” but they are out there!
