Back up 40+ RESULTS REAL Change Fellows on Capitol Hill today -- call Congress to support the EITC!

by Meredith Dodson, RESULTS Director of US Poverty Campaigns

Today more than 40 members of the RESULTS REAL Change Fellowship are on Capitol Hill, voicing their support for global health and education and urging Congress to support bipartisan proposals to expand the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) for childless workers. Right now, low-wage American workers that do not have children in the home are the one population that is taxed into poverty. House Speaker Paul Ryan and President Obama have proposed to expand the EITC, an important first step to remedy this situation. Let’s back up our young leaders, many of whom are sharing their own first-hand experiences of poverty, on Capitol Hill today!

TAKE ACTION TODAY: Make sure those phones in the 100+ Congressional offices meeting with RESULTS REAL Change Fellows today by calling your members of Congress (you can look them up by zip code at: http://capwiz.com/results/dbq/officials/ or call the Capitol Switchboard at: (202) 224-3121), then deliver this message:

Last December, Congress passed a bipartisan tax bill that made sure 16 million Americans did not go into or deeper into poverty by making tax provisions permanent. I urge Congress to build on that success by supporting a proposal from House Speaker Paul Ryan and President Obama to expand the Earned Income Tax Credit for workers without children. I believe no American should be taxed into poverty, and Congress should move forward on bipartisan proposals that can help fix this problem. Please let the Senator/Representative know I strongly support expanding the EITC for childless workers this year.

If you are unable to call, send a quick email to your members of Congress in support of expanding the EITC using our online alert, and forward this message to others urging them to do the same.

Want to engage at a deeper level to expand the EITC? Join with other local RESULTS advocates to schedule a meeting with your members of Congress, and amplify the message by submitting letters to local papers. In addition, please help spread the word to others — we are currently accepting applications for the 2016-17 REAL Change Fellowship. Fellows attend the RESULTS International Conference and then get on-going training throughout the year to take action on our issues and bring RESULTS to their local communities. If you or someone you know is 18-30 years old and interested in building your advocacy skills will making a big impact on poverty, apply at https://results.org/realchange.
