Weekly Update | Week of October 22, 2018

Quote of the Week

"But here’s the thing: change doesn’t happen just because we vote. It doesn’t happen just because there are new faces on Capitol Hill. It happens because you tell your members of Congress what you care about and what they can do about it. It happens because you make calls, you write letters, and you go to Capitol Hill. It happens because you demand it to happen. Election day is just the beginning. As an advocate, you can help write the rest of the story."

Rachel Irwin, Senior Writer for RESULTS, inspiring us with words to share with others in the run-up to the mid-term elections.

Quick Action

Take Action: Reach Out to Congress About TB Appropriations

Top Actions: Supporting TB Appropriations

Congress is on recess until after the election. However, that doesn't mean our advocacy is on hiatus. DC offices can still take our issues and opinions on board for action once legislators are back in town and Congress resumes session.

Use the October Action Sheet and Laser Talk to Support TB Funding. The fall chill has come to some of the country, but the heat is still on for TB appropriations. Utilize the October Action Sheet and companion laser talk to make the big ask. The U.S. and other global leaders made bold commitments toward ending TB on September 26 at the UN High-Level Meeting on TB. In the spirit of this commitment, ask your member(s) of Congress to speak to the the Chair and Ranking members of the State and Foreign Ops Subcommittees of Appropriations to use the House bilateral TB funding amount of $302 million in the final 2019 spending bill. This is the higher proposed number. The additional funding will save many of lives and send a powerful message to the world about the U.S.'s commitment to reaching 40 million people with TB treatment by 2022. Let the action sheet and laser talk support you in this action.

Do You Have 5 Minutes? Use Those Minutes to Reach Out to Congress on TB Via Our Online Action. You could also take and share our online action which is a quick way to reach out to Congress on TB appropriations that can also be shared far and wide on your social media channels.

The Reach Act: So Close to "Reach"-ing Half of Congress!

There are 205 names on the House version of the bill and 49 on the Senate version. Can we reach 218 in House and 50 in the Senate? Don't let up now! During this crowded time of year, we must continue to push this important legislation to the front, growing the list of cosponsors so that the call for support for this live-saving legislation is loud and clear. We can make our requests now for legislators to act upon when recess ends.

Ask your senator(s) or representative to support maternal and child health by cosponsoring the Reach Act today.

Pre-Election Engagement Support

Roughly 50 town hall engagements so far in this pre-election time! Your work getting our poverty issues in front of candidates signals that we're in it for the long haul. Some of these candidates will transform into legislators, and they will need to continue to hear from us, in our non-partisan manner, on issues of extreme poverty. In a sense, our work is just beginning.

  • Sign up here and Carly Pildis, Senior Associate for Advocacy and Organizing, will reach out to you with opportunities ideas, and training! She can also guide you in training people in your community.

  • Have you attended a townhall? Record your activity in our Candidate Engagement Tracker
