Global Poverty Campaigns

Weekly Update | Week of August 20, 2018

Quote of the Week

"It is in the interest of the U.S. that this High-Level Meeting succeed. The U.S. should remain a strong global leader in providing funding for effective TB programs and research, and not just sustain but expand its commitment. We stand ready to work with you to leverage the unprecedented opportunities for faster progress against TB presented by the High-Level Meeting."

Senate Letter to the Administration on UN High-Level Meeting on TB on September 26.

Top Action: Mobilize the Senate on TB

You did great work on the House TB letter to the Administration garnering 106 signers. Great work! Thank your reps for their leadership.

Now we need our Senators to sign on to their letter to the Administration. We have 13 signers so far – we're on our way, but we only have until August 31.

Getting our Senators to sign on to the Brown, Young, Cantwell, Sullivan letter to the Administration on the UN High-Level Meeting on TB will do two things: 1) Send a message to the Administration that TB leadership at the first-ever UN High-Level Meetings on TB is important to Congress, and 2) Build our base of TB supporters in the Senate. The letter closes on August 31. Here are your actions and tools:

If you want to know why we are fighting for TB, listen to powerful and potent civil society voices and stories from around the world. Also, check out our blog detailing our efforts on TB and the UN High-Level Meeting.

The Reach Act: So Close to 200 Cosponsors in the House! Can We Also Increase in the Senate?

We are committed to getting this legislation passed. Don't stop now!

As of August 21, 195 representatives from 44 states (88% of states) and DC have cosponsored the Reach Every Mother and Child Act (H.R.4022), 32 senators from 26 states (52% of states) have cosponsored the Senate version of the bill (S.1730). We must persist!

The Reach Act will make U.S. efforts on maternal and child health the best they can be through coordination, efficiency, and bold goals. We need to keep the momentum going through cosponsorship. Get senators and representatives to cosponsor the Reach Act, and if they are already cosponsors, move them up the Champion Scale by asking them to advocate for and lead on the issue.

3. Hear Kul Gautam, Board Chair of RESULTS on August 29. We’ve made incredible progress on child survival and extreme poverty over the past several decades. Kul Gautam, former Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and former Deputy Executive Director of UNICEF has been a leader in these efforts. Kul has worked with many organizations throughout the years, but two of his favorites are Peace Corps and RESULTS. He is inspired by their missions and their work. His first exposure to the Peace Corps was as a student in Nepal, and he learned of RESULTS during the early days of child survival revolution, which he helped spearhead. Kul is the recipient of the National Peace Corps Association’s 2018 Harris Wofford Global Citizen Award, NPCA’s highest honor. He is also the Board Chair of RESULTS.

On August 29, Kul is bringing together the National Peace Corps Association and RESULTS to celebrate the roles these organizations have played in his life and in creating change in the world. He also wants to highlight the mutual benefits and power of a partnership between the NPCA and RESULTS.
