Senate Bill 1911, the Reach Every Mother and Child Act of 2015

Last Thursday brought the introduction of S.1911 which works for the end of preventable maternal, newborn, and child deaths around the world. Watch for the text online as well as progress on cosponsorship. (We'll soon have a goal of how many cosponsors we'd like on the bill.) Also, watch for an August action sheet that will help you ask for cosponsorship of this bill. You all have done a magnificent job alerting the Senate to the bill while it was pending, and now it's here for support!

Utilize the August recess – and this laser talk – to book for face-to-face meetings while senators (and reps.) are back in-state and in-district. Ask for cosponsorship. Invite folks who are curious about your RESULTS work and care about maternal/child health to come along to any local meetings you book. State the case to Congress of why this legislation is smart, compassionate, and necessary.

Maternal/Child Health Sign-on Letter in House: We Exceeded Our Goal!

"Around the world there is a tradition of oppressing women and treating them differently and not giving them the same opportunities, and husbands beating their wives, and children not being sent to school. Those are traditions. Treating women and girls as second-class citizens. Those are bad traditions: they need to change."

These recent remarks by President Obama hint at the urgency of the very specific work we are currently engaged in regarding maternal and child health (MCH). As part of that work, we have an immediate opportunity. We were tasked with asking members of the House to sign a bipartisan letter to President Obama calling on him to maintain robust support for maternal and child survival programs in his 2017 budget, currently in formation . . . and boy, did you deliver! We are in the process of getting the full, verified list in print, but we know that we have 105 total signers (including 21 Republicans). A true bipartisan showing far exceeding our goal of 60 total signers, including 20 Republicans. This provides incredible momentum as we anticipate a maternal/child health bill in the House later this summer.

We will soon have the full and verified list of signers in print so that you can continue to meet, call, email, post, and tweet to convey your thanks to your representative if he/she signed onto the letter. You'll find this more information on our maternal/child health campaign on the whole on our website.

Fresh Media Toolkit: Put Pen to Paper in August for Maternal/Child Health (MCH)

Ready to write an op-ed in support of the new Senate maternal/child health bill? Inspired to pitch the idea of an editorial to the local paper that hasn't yet written on this issue about which you're so passionate? Want to tell the story of what you learned and what you accomplished at the International Conference? Need to thank your representative for signing onto the House maternal/child health letter?

Then utilize this brand new MCH media toolkit!

Also, if you're on social media, keep track of hashtag #savemomsandkids for news of August events on Capitol Hill highlighting the national coalition (including RESULTS!) working on MCH. For example, today, paper doll chains were dropped off at Senate offices to highlight S.1911 . . . and more creative, inspiring events are to come. Watch for more news on Twitter (@RESULTS_Tweets) and on our Facebook page.
