Quote of the Week

I know my readers will be asking how they can help, and one route is advocacy. Groups like Results.org offer excellent resources for encouraging members of Congress to do the right thing.

Action Matters!

Every action we take shows the world what we stand for. When we speak out and show up, we send a clear message: people experiencing poverty matter.

This summer, we’re turning up the volume with our Action Matters campaign. Each week, we’ll spotlight powerful ways to fuel our U.S. and global poverty advocacy. Use these ideas as inspiration — whether it’s something you’re already good at or something new to try.

Let’s build momentum, grow our grassroots power, and invite others to take action. Together, we’ll show the impact of what we do. Because action matters.

The Senate is still pushing for a reconciliation vote this week

Over the weekend, SNAP advocates got a win from the Senate Parliamentarian. She ruled that a Senate proposal requiring states with high SNAP “error rates” (benefit overpayments plus underpayments) to pay up to 15 percent of benefits violated the Byrd rule.* This ruling could prevent significant cuts to SNAP, but Senate GOP leaders quickly rewrote the provision and are waiting to see if it is Byrd-compliant. That is how determined they are to cut SNAP.

GOP leaders want a reconciliation vote this week. It’s critical we speak up now! Cutting health care and food assistance to fund tax breaks for the wealthy won’t make America great—it will make us sicker, hungrier, and more unfair.

We need to flood the Senate with calls and emails THIS WEEK telling them vote NO on the reconciliation bill. Call your senators at (202) 224-3121 and leave this message:

“My name is ______________, and I’m a constituent from ______________. I’m outraged that the Senate wants to pass a reconciliation bill that cuts health care, food assistance, and other vital services to fund tax cuts for the rich. Congress should be working to lift up families and strengthen communities. This bill does neither. I urge Sen. ______________ to stand up for what is right and vote NO on the reconciliation bill.”

After you call, level up your advocacy by sending an email. After you email, level up again by inviting your community to call and email too. Let the Senate know that no one wants this bill. Check our Actions and Allies page for other resources, and reach out to RESULTS staff if you need support. For a detailed comparison of the House and Senate Medicaid, SNAP, and Child Tax Credit provisions, please see the June 18 entry on our reconciliation blog.

*In the Senate, the “Byrd rule” requires that all provisions in a reconciliation bill be related to the federal budget. The Senate Parliamentarian decides if provisions meet the Byrd rule in a process informally called the “Byrd bath.” If the Parliamentarian decides a provision is not permitted, it must be changed (and reviewed again) or removed. If the provision remains unchanged, it must secure 60 votes to remain in the bill, a tough hurdle to meet in partisan legislation.

RESULTS Explainer: What is SNAP?

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) has a strong history. It started as a smaller Food Stamp Program during the Great Depression. SNAP is now the largest food assistance program in the U.S. SNAP serves around 40 million people each month. SNAP primarily serves families with children, seniors, and people with disabilities. SNAP helped 3.4 million people rise above the federal poverty line in 2023. SNAP is a mandatory entitlement. This means funding continues year-to-year unless Congress changes it. If eligible, applicants receive guaranteed benefits based on income and family size. SNAP adapts to economic conditions. It expands during tough times and contracts when the economy improves. Benefits average less than $7 per person per day. These benefits arrive via an electronic benefit transfer (EBT) card. SNAP EBT cards work like a debit card and can only be used for non-alcoholic food items at grocery stores. Read more about SNAP.

Championing the Global Fund this week

For over 20 years, RESULTS has advocated for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. And this year is a Global Fund replenishment year. This life-saving public-private partnership has been supported by the U.S. over its years of work, and this year must be no different.

Since its inception in 2002, the Global Fund has helped save 65 million lives around the world. Soon House leaders will announce their proposed Global Fund funding for fiscal year 2026. The U.S. has a history of committing $1 to the Global Fund for every $2 pledged by other donor countries. This must continue if the Global Fund is to have the support it needs to continue its vital work.

Contact your members of Congress right away. Specifically request that they support the Global Fund in FY26 by maintaining the 1:2 match. Our online action alert will help you send that message. Then let others know that their Action Matters by sending them the alert so they can take action as well.

We are growing the movement to end poverty. Be part of it!

You won’t want to miss an important gathering this Wednesday, June 25 at 8:00 PM ET for our next RESULTS Quarterly Outreach Gathering. We are in the midst of our Action Matters campaign, and this gathering will offer specific steps to help your group grow in size and strength. The focus of this gathering will include practicing one-on-one conversations with new and prospective advocates.  Come ready for action — and invite others from your group to join! Register today.

Another way you can help grow the movement to end poverty is to donate to our work. And now is the perfect time to do so. Two generous volunteers are matching ALL donations to RESULTS Educational Fund up to $50,000! Help us meet the match by giving or by inviting others to donate today.

TL;DR (too long; didn’t read): Speak up for rejection of the Senate reconciliation bill today; read about SNAP; champion the Global Fund; and take advantage of outreach support as well as a fundraising match.
