Got Two Minutes? Schedule Your Group Planning Meeting (January Action)January is the time each year when all RESULTS groups set their group goals for the year. We call this Group Planning. On last Saturday’s RESULTS U.S. Poverty National Webinar, we went through Group Planning and many of you participated in that process. If you did, thank you! We look forward to reading your exciting plans for 2016 (please send a copy of your Group Plan Summary to Jos Linn at [email protected]). However, some of you were not able to plan on Saturday. If not, please schedule a time for your group to meet this month to do planning. Planning is such an integral part of your success as a group and RESULTS’ success as an organization. Take advantage of this opportunity when Congress is just getting started to set ambitious goals for the year! TAKE ACTION: Take two minutes to schedule your Group Planning meeting this month. Contact you group members to find a date in January to meet for planning. See the January Action for details on how to have a powerful planning meeting. You can find all the resources you need for planning on our Group Resources page. Got Ten Minutes? Complete and Submit Your Group Plans (January Action)Thank you to everyone who participated in last Saturday’s RESULTS U.S. Poverty National Webinar. On the webinar, we celebrated our recent success in getting important provisions of the EITC and CTC provisions made permanent, as well as some of your grassroots successes for the year. These include:
These successes were created in part last January when most of you did your Group Plans. The process of setting goals and putting them in writing increases the chances of you reaching them. This is one of the primary reasons RESULTS and you, our volunteers, have been so successful in protecting and expanding policies that reduce poverty in the U.S. and around the world. TAKE ACTION: Take ten minutes to complete your 2016 Group Plan Summary (PDF version) and submit a copy to Jos Linn at [email protected]. Here are some of our proposed 2016 U.S. Poverty goals; help us reach them in your Group Planning:

Also, if you would like to be guided through the process with staff, listen to the recording of last weekend’s National Webinar (and download the slides and summary) on our National Webinars page. If you met on Saturday to plan, please finalize what your group came up with a send it to Jos today. If you’re not sure how to submit it online, please contact Jos and he will help you. If you did not plan on Saturday or your group needs more time to finish it, please schedule your planning meeting so you can complete it by the end of the month. Our goal is to have all plans submitted by January 31. |

Got Twenty Minutes? Schedule Face-to-Face Meetings and Join Researching Members of Congress Webinar Tonight (January Action)As you work to lay out your goals for the year, set yourselves up for success by requesting face-to-face meetings with all of your members of Congress this month. This is an election year so now is a good time to start setting the agenda for the election conversation by meeting with lawmakers and telling them to make ending poverty a national priority. You have several opportunities to meet with members of Congress in the next month. The House will be on recess starting Thursday through the end of next week and both the House and Senate will be on recess the week of February 15. These face-to-face conversations will be critical as we work to end poverty in America. TAKE ACTION: Take twenty minutes to schedule your first face-to-face meetings of the year. Have the point persons for your representative(s) and senators call to request face-to-face meetings. See the January Action for tips on requesting meetings, including the language to use in your verbal or written request. You can find contact information and the names of the Washington DC schedulers on our Elected Officials page (under “Staff”). Once you confirm a meeting, please contact RESULTS Director of US Poverty Campaigns Meredith Dodson ([email protected]) for coaching, materials, and requests for your meeting. Researching your members of Congress is an important part of preparing for any face-to-face meeting. Tonight, RESULTS volunteer leader Allison Gallaher will hold her very popular Learn How to Effectively Research Your Members of Congress webinar. This training will show you how to get helpful information on the background, voting record, and issue positions for your members of Congress. This is a great training for new and veteran advocates alike. The training is this tonight, January 12 at 8:00 pm ET. Quick NewsKemp GOP Presidential Forum on Poverty and Expanding Opportunity. Last Saturday, the Jack Kemp Foundation hosted a forum in Columbia, SC, featuring 2016 Republican presidential candidates and moderated by House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI-1) and Senator Tim Scott (R-SC). The day before, the Vote to End Hunger campaign (RESULTS is a VTEH Steering Committee member) held a press conference, highlighting "While economic growth and private charity are important to making progress against hunger and poverty, they are not enough. Safety net programs and policies that promote opportunity are also needed." In case you missed it, Tianna Gaines Turner, a member of Witnesses to Hunger and also a part of RESULTS Experts on Poverty who spoke on our December National Webinar, shared her perspective on the Kemp Forum with MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry. Watch State of the Union Address Tonight. After hearing the Republican presidential candidate provide their remedies for poverty at the Kemp Forum last Saturday, tune in tonight to hear what President Obama has on tap to expand opportunity in his final State of the Union Address. You can watch the speech on most major networks. Register for Tomorrow’s Vote to End Hunger Training Webinar. Building on last fall’s launch of the Vote to End Hunger campaign, RESULTS and other groups will be hosting an Advocacy Training tomorrow, January 13 at 3:00 pm ET. This is a repeat of the training done in December on how to effectively engage candidates on the campaign trail about making ending hunger and poverty a national priority. RESULTS Director of U.S. Poverty Campaigns Meredith Dodson will co-lead the training. Sign up today at the Vote to End Hunger website and urge others you know to participate as well. Get a Copy of Between the World and Me. In 2016, we plan to talk more about the racial wealth gap. Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates has been a critically-acclaimed and award winning book looking at race in modern American society. Next month, we want your groups to read his book and discuss it in your monthly meetings. We urge you to buy the book or rent it from your local library so you’ll be able to read it before or during February. We’ll have more details about this “book club” action in the coming weeks. |
