Quote of the Week

“Congress and the White House must act swiftly — not to score political points, but to keep faith with the people they serve. Congress, do your job!”

– RESULTS Fort Worth volunteer Craig Roshaven in an October 5 letter to the editor in the Dallas Morning News

600 Voices Strong — Let’s Finish the Year Powerfully

As shared on this past weekend’s October National Webinar, our “600 Voices” Media Campaign is in full swing. Our goal: 600 media pieces by December 31 to spotlight poverty issues and drive policy change.

Local media is one of our most powerful tools. Over the years, RESULTS volunteers have helped secure important victories such as the expansion of Medicaid, funding for global health and education programs, and an expanded Child Tax Credit in part through thousands of media pieces. This campaign aims to continue that tradition. So far in 2025, RESULTS volunteers have published 409 media pieces. That means we need just 191 more pieces to hit our goal. Shout out to RESULTS volunteers in Texas who got seven media pieces in five days this past week!

We can do this — especially now, as the federal government shutdown drags into its second week and Congress faces major decisions on our campaign priorities. Your media right now can help shape the conversation.

Here are some suggested media hooks for this week:

Food Security. The Special Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is a lifeline for moms and young children. With the shutdown, it may run out of funding within two weeks. The OBBA SNAP cuts and the cancellation of aid to food banks this year make this even more urgent.

  • Media hook: Urge Congress to fully fund WIC and stop the erosion of nutrition assistance.

Global Health. New impact reports from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance show that these programs save lives and need strong funding to continue.

  • Media hook: Tell Congress to fund global health programs at House-approved levels or higher in the FY26 budget.

Health Care. Democrats are demanding action on health care before agreeing to any temporary funding deal. Without it, 5 million people could lose ACA coverage and 15 million could lose Medicaid over the next decade, due to cuts and omissions in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA).

  • Media hook: Call on Congress to extend ACA tax credits and repeal Medicaid cuts in OBBBA. Americans’ health is on the line.

Constitutional Protections. This year, the Trump Administration has overridden Congress by freezing or rescinding agreed-upon funds. Congress must act now to protect its power of the purse.

  • Media hook: Demand that any final budget deal includes clear safeguards to ensure funding is spent as Congress directs.

Submit your next letter today! Find letter templates in our Action Center that you can customize and send. See our online media tools for resources to help you write and submit media pieces. Of course, please reach out to Jos Linn for media questions or coaching.

Also, plan to join Jos for an additional Media Office Hour tomorrow, October 8, 9:00-10:00 p.m. ET. (He’ll be doing two per month for the rest of the year.) If you need help finding a hook for your media piece, need coaching on how to talk about an issue, are not sure how to submit your letter, or any other question you need help with, plan to drop in. No need to register – just drop in and he’ll be there to help. Join via Zoom at https://results.zoom.us/j/93668005494 or dial (312) 626-6799, meeting ID 936 6800 5494.

Listen to or watch the October National Webinar recording. We were incredibly fortunate to have so many stories of you, our advocates, featured on our National Webinar this past weekend. Moreover, the spotlight was on the RESULTS Fellowship program as well as our Experts on Poverty. Take a look. Be inspired.

TL;DR (too long; didn’t read): Help us achieve 191 more published media pieces so we can meet our 600 Voices Media Campaign goal by year’s end, consider nominating a fellow advocate for a 2025 RESULTS Grassroots Award, and enjoy the October National Webinar recording.
