While lawmakers are home, get local media on what they should be working on

We know this week is filled with festive activities and time with loved ones. We hope you enjoy every minute of your time together. If you have a few minutes this week to take action, remember that lawmakers will be in Washington for only a few more weeks this year. While they are home this week, submit letters to the editor on one or more of these important issues.

  1. Pass the End Tuberculosis (TB) Now Act and READ Act. We need the House to pass the End TB Now Act (H.R. 1776) and READ Act Reauthorization (H.R. 681) before they leave for the year. These bills are vital in ensuring that resources to treat and prevent tuberculosis and expand access to education globally are going to those most in need. They may be adding both to one of the “must-pass” bills for the end of the year. However they do it, we need both bills passed in the House ASAP. Submit your newest letter to the editor today urging Congress to pass the End TB Now Act and the READ Act this year.
  2. Protect SNAP. In 2025, leaders will renew their calls for cuts to SNAP in Farm Bill negotiations. But it won’t stop there. Some lawmakers also want deep cuts and restrictions to SNAP and Medicaid to help offset an extension of the 2017 Trump tax cuts. Denying people access to food and health care to give tax cuts to the wealthy is indefensible. Let them know now that you strongly oppose cutting SNAP or Medicaid.
  3. Expand the CTC and EITC. The Child Tax Credit (CTC) and Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) must be part of any tax bill next year. These credits are vital to help workers and families lift themselves from poverty. Voters were clear that higher costs and the economy were priority number one for them in the election. More tax cuts for the wealthy will do nothing to help everyday folks make ends meet. Expanding the CTC and EITC will.

TAKE ACTION: Submit your next letter to the editor today! Use local media while lawmakers are home to remind them they have important work to do. In our Double/50 media campaign, you’ve gotten 144 pieces published in 32 states. Help us get to 300 media pieces covering all 50 states by the end of the year. Find updated letter to the editor templates and media hooks in the Double/50 Campaign media hooks tracker. And please let us know when you get published by completing our media report form. (Here are the 18 states where we still need media: AL, AR, CO, DE, GA, KS, KY, LA, MD, MS, MT, NE, NH, NJ, NY, RI, SD, WI.)
