RESULTS Weekly Update November 22, 2022

November 22, 2022

Quote of the Week

“That the expanded CTC was allowed to lapse is shameful. Its reinstatement before the end of the year would truly make this lame-duck session a mighty one.”

– RESULTS West Virginia volunteer Joanna DiStefano in a November 17 letter to the editor in the Washington Post

In gratitude, we at RESULTS want you to know that we are grateful for you this week and always.

Can you send a letter to the editor this week on the CTC or TB?

Congress is on a holiday recess this week. When they return to Washington next week, they will move quickly to conclude their work for the year. They hope to be done by December 16. Between now and then, our job is to do all we can to pass a Child Tax Credit (CTC) expansion and the End TB Now Act. With members of Congress home this week, letters to the editor are a great way to get their attention. Imagine lawmakers reading your letter urging them to help lift children out of poverty by expanding the CTC? And reading your letter urging them to save lives by supporting the End TB Now Act? Just a few minutes of your time this week could make a world of difference to people experiencing poverty.

TAKE ACTION: We know many of you have busy schedules this holiday week. Can you take a few minutes to help us get 100 media pieces this month to move us closer to our policy goals? Here’s how:

  • Got Five Minutes? Send a letter to the editor (LTE) using our online media actions. The RESULTS Action Center has two online media alerts, one on the CTC and the other tuberculosis. Click on one of the media alerts, read the sample letter, edit it as you like (at least change the subject line), fill in your contact info, and hit send. Rinse and repeat with other one. It’s that easy.
  • Got Fifteen Minutes? Draft and submit a personalized LTE and send it to your local paper. A letter you write is better than one from a pre-filled form (newspapers want unique content). If you need help getting started, our November Action Sheets provide background info and talking points to help you. If appropriate, share personal experiences or why you care about child poverty or global TB. Statistics can also help, such state CTC data or the recent WHO TB report. Finally, for CTC letters, focus on the Senate; call on your senators by name to expand the CTC to all low-income families. For TB letters, urge your House and Senate members by name to co-sponsor the End TB Act Now. Please let us know if you need help.

If you get published this week, please let us know by filling out our Media Report Form.

Join December National Webinar with Sen. Sherrod Brown. Join us for the final RESULTS National Webinar of 2022 with special guest Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH). He will share his thoughts on how we can best advocate for an expansion of the CTC and TB policy improvements in the final weeks of the 117th Congress. We’ll also celebrate achievements our volunteers have accomplished this year. The webinar is Saturday, December 3 at 1:00 pm ET. Register today!

Listen to the RESULTS post-election webinar. Thank you to volunteers and potential volunteers for attending our “What’s next in the fight against poverty?” post-election webinar last week. RESULTS staff shared insights on how the election likely impacts our work on tax policy, global health, and global education next year. We also highlighted a critical action you can take right now to move our work on U.S. child poverty and global tuberculosis forward before the end of this year. You can view the recording and slides on the RESULTS website.

Thank you, Action Networks! RESULTS Action Networks, which are simply people willing to take action on our issues at key moments, are a vital part of our advocacy work. They are cultivated by local RESULTS groups. Right now, we have 39 active Action Networks in 26 states, with the potential for 11 more. We’ve had action network members attend media trainings (Tacoma), get media published (Western Colorado), and even join their local group as a volunteer (Anchorage). If you are interested in running an Action Network in your local RESULTS group or as a Free Agent, please contact Sarah Leone at [email protected]. Also, learn more by joining one of our Action Network Manager Celebration webinars on December 14 to recap a successful 2022. See login details below.
