RESULTS Weekly Update November 21, 2023
In gratitude, we at RESULTS want you to know that we are grateful for you this week and always. Thank you for all you do.
If you do one thing this week, help make our webinar with John Green a powerful event!
On Saturday, December 2, RESULTS is thrilled to welcome author John Green to our monthly National Webinar. Mr. Green has written numerous best-selling books including The Fault in Our Stars, and most recently The Anthropocene Reviewed. He is also passionate about tackling inequity in tuberculosis (TB) treatment. Mr. Green will join us to discuss his efforts to address the injustice of TB and why it is imperative to take action now.
The webinar is Saturday, December 2 at 1:00 pm ET. This webinar is an excellent opportunity to introduce new people to RESULTS and our work on global health. Please send our December Webinar promotional graphic to people you know and invite them to join you for this special opportunity. Register at www.tinyurl.com/RESULTS2024.
Reminder: If you have attended a RESULTS National Webinar in the past, you must still register for this webinar to attend. The Zoom link to join will be sent a few days before the webinar.
If you do two things this week, get media urging action on poverty
Congress is on recess all this week. They averted a government shutdown last week by passing a “laddered” continuing resolution (CR). This gives them until early 2024 to finish the FY2024 spending bills (some programs have a deadline of January 19, others February 2).
While these delays are avoidable (the fiscal year started on October 1), it does give us more time to convince Congress to take action on our issues. But not a lot of time. On expanding the Child Tax Credit (CTC), most DC insiders believe that January 19 (when the first rung of the laddered CR expires) is the deadline to get a tax package done. Any later and the IRS can’t adequately prepare for tax season. There are also bills that must pass in 2023 to which a tax package could be attached. On passing the READ Act Reauthorization and the End TB Now Act, the best opportunity will be attaching them to the final FY2024 spending bills.
After registering for and promoting the December 2 webinar with John Green (above), the second best thing you can do this week call attention to these issues. No one is in DC this week, so your best tool is media. Since for many this is the time of year to show thanks, use letters to the editor and op-eds to express gratitude that we have elected leaders with the capacity and resources to reduce child poverty, end tuberculosis, and invest in education.
Once you get published, please send your media to the relevant aides in your congressional offices (next week is fine) and please let us know too.
