Join Thursday’s Post-Election Webinar because even though the election is done, our work is not
A week after the election, people are still feeling its effect. RESULTS Executive Director Joanne Carter summed up what many people are feeling in her statement in response to the election. She reminded us that first and foremost, that no matter which candidates you supported, taking time for self-care is important. Disappointment can lead to despair – just as elation can lead to overconfidence – if we don’t take time to feel what we are feeling. Ignoring, rationalizing, blaming, and gloating only make things worse. The only way out of the fear is through it.
RESULTS has always been, first and foremost, a community. It is the foundation of our strength, resiliency, and success. No election can change that. We thrive because we have each other. RESULTS is like a catenary arch (think the St. Louis Gateway Arch). A catenary arch works by redirecting gravity into compression along its curve. In other words, it literally stands upright because each piece is leaning on the other. That is who we are. Together we are strong and able to withstand forces that try to topple us over.
This Thursday, RESULTS is hosting an “Organizing for the Future” webinar. This is an opportunity for our community to lean into our values and harness our collective power as advocates. This webinar will be a launching point for our upcoming First 100 Days Campaign. You’ll learn what we want to accomplish by May 2025 and how you can take tangible actions to make an impact.
This is more than just a meeting; it’s about activating our community and rallying together for the challenges ahead. It’s a wonderful opportunity to reconnect, refocus, and prepare for the work that lies ahead. Hope to see all of you there!
TAKE ACTION: Register for our November 14 “Organizing for the Future” webinar. We invite our entire RESULTS network to participate. We also welcome anyone looking to channel their energy into making the world a better place. The webinar is this Thursday, November 14 at 8:30 p.m. ET.
Use media to push Congress to act responsibly
After six weeks off, Congress returns to Washington, DC, this week with much unfinished business. FY2025 appropriations, the Farm Bill, disaster relief are all on the table. However, based on the outcome of the election, Congress is likely to pass another continuing resolution so the new Congress can finalize FY2025 appropriations. They are likely to extend the Farm Bill as well into the new Congress.
The new Congress and Administration are likely to be more aggressive in changes to U.S. and global poverty programs. Cuts to SNAP and foreign aid are a possibility. In addition, the new Congress may try to move quickly on tax policy, passing additional tax cuts for the wealthy. Whether that would include expansions of the Child Tax Credit (CTC) and Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) remains to be seen.
This makes our media work all the more important right now. Pushing Congress to protect SNAP, expand the CTC, and to support global health and nutrition initiatives sends a signal to members that while the election is over, the people’s support for these priorities remains firm. Make no mistake, the outcome of the election means we have our work cut out for us. But we are ready for the challenge.
TAKE ACTION: Your media will help push Congress to protect programs that reduce poverty in the U.S. and around the world. As part of our Double/50 media campaign, you’ve gotten 117 pieces published in 26 states so far. Thank you! And we can still hit our goal of 300 media pieces covering all 50 states by the end of the year. Get started today on your next letter or op-ed. You can find letter to the editor templates and media hooks in the Double/50 Campaign media hooks tracker. And please let us know when you get published by completing our media report form.
(Hint! Here are the 24 states where we still need media: AL, AK, AR, CO, DE, GA, ID, IA, KS, KY, LA, MD, MS, MT, NH, NJ, NM, NY, ND, RI, SC, SD, VA, WI)
