RESULTS Weekly Update June 17, 2025

June 17, 2025

Quote of the Week

“If Sens. Jon Husted and Bernie Moreno really care about families in Ohio, they should completely reject the U.S. budget reconciliation bill, for the benefit of all Ohioans.”

 – RESULTS Cleveland volunteer Keith Task in a June 2 letter to the editor in the Cleveland Plain Dealer

Action Matters

Every action we take shows the world what we stand for. When we speak out and show up, we send a clear message: people experiencing poverty matter.

This summer, we’re turning up the volume with our Action Matters campaign. Each week, we’ll spotlight powerful ways to fuel our U.S. and global poverty advocacy. Use these ideas as inspiration — whether it’s something you’re already good at or something new to try.

Let’s build momentum, grow our grassroots power, and invite others to take action. Together, we’ll show the impact of what we do. Because action matters.

Reject the Senate reconciliation bill

Senate Republicans have shared more details about their version of the House reconciliation bill passed in May. Unfortunately, it is not an improvement. Here’s what the current version of the Senate bill would do:

  • Work requirements for families: Families with kids over 9 years old would have to meet burdensome work reporting rules to keep their SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits. These rules put 8 million people at risk of losing food assistance. (The House requirements kick in at 8 years old, impacting 11 million people.)
  • State costs for SNAP errors: States with more than 6 percent error rates in SNAP would have to spend more money. They would have to cover up to 15 percent of benefit costs (compared to 25 percent in the House bill). This would force states to pay tens of millions of additional dollars to maintain benefits.
  • Work requirements for Medicaid: Workers without dependents and parents with kids over age 14 would have to work at least 80 hours a month to get Medicaid. If they fail to properly document these hours, they would lose their Medicaid coverage. (The House bill exempts parents.)
  • Child Tax Credit (CTC): The credit would increase from $2,000 to $2,200 per child, but only for wealthier families. (The House increases it to $2,500.) The 17 million children currently excluded from the full CTC remain ignored.
  • Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC): 17 million low-income families would have to jump through new hoops to claim the EITC, making it harder to claim their credit.

As with the House bill, the Senate version also targets immigrants and LGBTQ communities with harmful policies. Bottom line: the Senate version strips health care and food assistance from millions, while giving big tax breaks to the wealthy.

A vote could happen next week. We must act now. Submit letters to the editor THIS WEEK telling your senators to vote NO. Use your media talents to build public pressure against this punitive and irresponsible legislation. To show that Action Matters, level up your media by asking others to write too! Check our Actions and Allies page for other resources, and reach out to RESULTS staff if you need support.

Also, plan to join the national Senate call-in day tomorrow, urging senators to reject the reconciliation bill. Look for an action alert from RESULTS tomorrow morning. Call and share it far and wide!

Support the Global Fund

Last Thursday, the House barely passed President Trump’s rescission request, which cancels of $8.3 billion in foreign aid. Now the bill goes to the Senate, which has until mid-July to pass it. RESULTS strongly opposes this bill and urges all senators to reject it.

However, our current focus is on the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. For over 20 years, RESULTS has advocated for this life-saving public-private partnership. Since it started in 2002, the Global Fund has helped save 65 million lives around the world. This success has been achieved in part because the U.S. has consistently provided the financial resources needed to support the Global Fund’s work. We need the U.S to do that again.

The Global Fund is up for replenishment this year. For years, the U.S. has committed $1 to the Global Fund for every $2 pledged by other donor countries. Next week, House leaders may announce their proposed Global Fund funding for fiscal year 2026. It is vital they maintain the 1:2 match.

Contact your members of Congress urging them to prioritize the Global Fund in FY26 by maintaining the 1:2 match. Use our online action alert to send that message today. Level up your action by sending the alert to your Action Networks, warm leads, and others you know. Urge them to speak up for the Global Fund when it is needed most!
