RESULTS Weekly Update January 31, 2024

January 30, 2024

Quote of the Week

“Regardless of their political party, I call on all of our Congress to ensure the health and welfare of all its citizens, not just the wealthiest ones, by passing an expansion of the Child Tax Credit.”

– RESULTS St. Louis volunteer Sarah Miller in a January 3 letter to the editor in the Arizona Daily Star

House CTC vote is happening tonight – please call now!

As noted in the action alert sent yesterday, the House of Representatives is expected to vote on H.R. 7024, the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act later today. This is the tax bill that expands the Child Tax Credit (CTC) for an estimated 16 million children.

RESULTS volunteers have been working for more than two years to expand the CTC, especially after the 2021 CTC expansion expired. This bill does not expand the CTC to cover all children experiencing poverty, but it brings us closer to it. If and when this bill passes, we’ll push to expand the credit again. In the meantime, we must do all we can for whom we can.

It is important that this bill passes with a strong bipartisan vote, so we need as many people calling Congress as possible. The bill needs to pass by a two-thirds vote in the House, and its fate in the Senate is unknown. A strong bipartisan vote in the House will put pressure on senators to get this done. Once you’ve called, please send this message to everyone you know and urge them to call too.

TAKE ACTION: If you have not called in the last 24 hours, please call (202) 224-3121 and ask for your representative’s office (find your representative). Once connected, please leave this message:

Hello, my name is ____________. I am a constituent from ____________ and a RESULTS volunteer. I am calling to ask Rep. ____________ to vote YES on H.R. 7024, the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act. This bill expands the Child Tax Credit for 16 million children and gives the families of 500,000 children the tools to lift themselves out of poverty. This bipartisan bill provides much needed relief to American families. I urge Rep. ____________ to vote YES on H.R. 7024. Thank you for your time.

If you have questions or need help, please contact RESULTS staff.

Quick News on U.S. and Global Poverty

Watch a RESULTS volunteer call Congress. Like thousands of people around the country, RESULTS Indiana volunteer Brendan Bow recently called his representative urging him to support the new tax bill that expands the Child Tax Credit. What makes Brendan’s call special is that he recorded it, and then shared on social media to inspire others to call. If you are shy about calling or know others who are, share Brendan’s video (or make your own) showing how easy and powerful it can be. Thank you, Brendan!

New global education report. In our online newsroom, read about a new   report that examines USAID’s work in basic education, an important report in the midst of our work to reauthorize the READ Act on global education. Take a look at the report as well as comments by RESULTS Executive Director Joanne Carter.
