December 3, 2024

Quote of the Week

“Protecting and valuing children crosses party lines, so there’s no acceptable reason our elected leaders can’t work together to strengthen both SNAP and the CTC.”

Join Saturday’s National Webinar with Rep. Barbara Lee

Join us for the final RESULTS National Webinar of the year this Saturday, December 7. We are thrilled to welcome Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA-12) as our guest speaker this month. Congresswoman Lee has been a tireless champion for investments in anti-poverty program. Before she retires from Congress at the end of this year, we want to take the opportunity to again learn from her experience and thank her for her leadership. Also, on the webinar, we’ll celebrate successes from this year (including announcing the winners of our 2024 grassroots awards) and kick off our annual planning season. Please join us!

TAKE ACTION: Register for the RESULTS National Webinar this Saturday, December 7 at 1:00 p.m. ET.  Once registered, registrants will receive their confirmation and Zoom link a day or two before the webinar (be sure to check your junk mail if you don’t see it). You can find the slides and recordings from all our webinars on our National Webinars page.

December is busy for Congress and advocates alike

Lawmakers will be in Washington for only a short time before the year draws to a close. In the hustle and bustle of this festive season, make letter-writing part of your activities. Letters to the editor on one or more of our campaigns can – and will – make a difference. Have you written and submitted a letter to the editor yet this year?

  1. We must pass the End Tuberculosis (TB) Now Act and READ Act. We need the House to pass the End TB Now Act (H.R. 1776) and READ Act Reauthorization (H.R. 681) before they leave for the year. Resources to treat and prevent tuberculosis. Expanded access to education globally. That’s what’s at stake. Lawmakers may be adding both pieces of legislation to one of the “must-pass” bills for the end of the year. However they do it, we need both bills passed in the House ASAP. Use our helpful template and urge Congress to pass the End TB Now Act and the READ Act this year.
  2. We must protect SNAP. Next year, leaders will renew their calls for cuts to SNAP in Farm Bill negotiations. Some lawmakers also want deep cuts and restrictions to SNAP and Medicaid to help offset an extension of the 2017 Trump tax cuts. Food and health care for families are on the line. Read this piece by recent RESULTS Fellow Nadia Hasan for inspiration and motivation. Then let Congress know that you strongly oppose cutting SNAP or Medicaid by writing and submitting your letter.
  3. We must expand the CTC and EITC. The Child Tax Credit (CTC) and Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) must be part of any tax bill next year. As people around the country grapple with economic realities, these credits provide vital support, helping workers and families lift themselves from poverty. Check out our online template and start writing your letter on the CTC and the EITC.

TAKE ACTION: Submit your next letter to the editor today! In our Double/50 media campaign, you’ve gotten 161 pieces published in 34 states. Help us get to 300 media pieces covering all 50 states by the end of the year. Find updated letter to the editor templates and media hooks in the Double/50 Campaign media hooks tracker. And please let us know when you get published by completing our media report form. (Here are the 16 states where we still need media: AL, AR, CO, DE, GA, KS, KY, LA, MS, MT, NE, NH, NJ, RI, SD, WI.)

Join webinar on budget rules in the new Congress. The new Congress is expected to act quickly to approve a joint Budget Resolution, with special rules to make it easier to cut critical anti-poverty programs to finance more tax cuts for the wealthy. Join the Coalition on Human Needs for “How the New Congress Will Try to Use Budget Rules”  to learn how this process works and how advocates can push back at these efforts. The webinar is Thursday, December 12 at 12:00 p.m. ET. Register for the webinar today.
