RESULTS Weekly Update December 17, 2024
Quote of the Week
“Elected leaders work for us, whether we voted for them or not. We have the power and the duty to hold all of them accountable. We simply cannot stop showing up.”

Keep pushing Congress on the End TB Now Act
Congress will be in session for only a few more days. There is still hope that they will add the End Tuberculosis Now Act to bills that must pass before they leave. This means we still have a chance to influence what they do. Please call your representative again today. Urge them to push House leaders to add H.R. 1776 to any remaining must-pass bill. Amplify that message by submitting letters to the editor on the End TB Now Act.
TAKE ACTION: Please call your representative again today (202-224-3121) and leave this message:
My name is ___________ and a constituent from ________________. I volunteer with RESULTS and we need your help with a bipartisan House bill vital to global health. The End Tuberculosis Now Act (H.R. 1776) focuses on finding, testing, and treating the leading infectious disease killer in the world, tuberculosis. The bill pushes USAID to create bold strategies and to better monitor and evaluate TB programs. This will help ensure efficiency, accountability, and impact. The bill has incredible bipartisan support and has already passed the Senate. Will you please tell Representative __________ to urge House leadership to include H.R. 1776 in the one of the remaining must-pass bills?
Schedule your group planning meeting
It’s time again to plan for success! Each year, RESULTS groups and advocates gather to discuss shared responsibilities, interests, and goals. They use that information to form a Group Roadmap for the year. This roadmap helps you plan and focus. It also helps RESULTS staff better coach you to create the political will to end poverty. The process is important, enlightening, and fun.
TAKE ACTION: Please schedule your local RESULTS group’s planning meeting. We recommend meeting in December or early January to discuss your 2025 groups roles and goals. Use our planning guide and other resources to help have a productive meeting. Find materials on the “Working with Your RESULTS Group” page of our website. Please set a goal to complete your 2025 Roadmap and Group Roster by January 15. If you have questions, please contact Jos Linn.
Use your media to push the new Congress to act
2025 will be a busy year for our work to end poverty. We will face both threats and opportunities on many fronts. If we want to move forward in the fight against AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria, we need Congress to support a strong replenishment of the Global Fund next year. If we want to make meaningful reductions in child poverty, we need Congress to significantly expand the Child Tax Credit next year. If we want to advance the fight against hunger, we need to make sure Congress protects investments in nutrition both in the U.S. and abroad.
The time to tell them about these priorities is now. With only a few weeks left before the new Congress begins, your letters to the editor and op-eds could be the tipping point. Use these last days of 2024 to set us up for a powerful 2025!
TAKE ACTION: Let’s finish our Double/50 media campaign strong by getting letters to the editor and op-eds published now on our most important issues. Use our Double/50 Campaign media hooks tracker has updated media templates and regularly updated media hooks. If you need help with your next letter or op-ed, please join our monthly Media Office Hour tomorrow, December 18, 2:00-3:00 p.m. ET. Join via Zoom at https://results.zoom.us/j/93668005494 or call (312) 626-6799, meeting ID 936 6800 5494. No registration is required. Quick News on U.S. and Global Poverty
House passes the READ Act Reauthorization. The READ Act Reauthorization (H.R. 681) has finally passed the House and may pass the Senate this week. Your advocacy made this critical investment in global education equity a priority. At the same time, the READ Act will stand as an attachment to defense legislation that is harmful. RESULTS condemns the provisions in the defense bill that perpetuate violence and oppression, especially against LGBTQIA+ children. We will post more on the READ Act’s passage after the Senate vote.
