RESULTS Weekly Update August 1, 2023

August 1, 2023

Quote of the Week

“After being affected by TB, living in poverty and meeting a member of Congress, I was inspired to take action and still take action.”

– RESULTS Wisconsin volunteer Mary Domingo in a July 23 letter to the editor in the Wisconsin State Journal

Signatures needed this week on Senate TB letter to the Administration

August 4 is the current deadline for signatures on a new bipartisan Senate letter to the Biden Administration which, as the similar House letter did recently, urges bold leadership at the September 22 United Nations High Level Meeting on tuberculosis. This letter is co-led by Senators Brown (D-OH) and Young (R-IN) and needs our support. You did phenomenal work on the bipartisan House letter to the Administration, and now we need 51 signatures on this Senate letter. Time is short, but we know the power and effectiveness you have when you act.

More TB cases. More TB deaths. That’s what happened during the COVID-19 pandemic as necessary resources were diverted from TB care.  Unfortunately, TB is disproportionately affecting low-income and otherwise marginalized communities, with 98% of TB cases and deaths occurring in low- and middle-income countries. That’s why it’s so critical that we keep the advocacy momentum going with a strong showing on this Senate letter. We haven’t a moment to waste.

TAKE ACTION: Ask your senators today to sign this critical letter to the Administration asking for ambitious leadership at the fall United Nations High Level Meeting on tuberculosis. The letter itself has full instructions on how to sign on. August 4 is the current deadline for signatures.

Congress is on recess – time for them to hear from you

Congress is on recess for the next five weeks. A perfect time for them to hear from you – their bosses. This is your chance to tell them (and their staff) directly what they should focus on when they return to Washington in September.

  • Will they work to pass an expansion of the Child Tax Credit (CTC)?
  • With they work to pass the End TB Now Act?
  • Will they work to pass the READ Act?
  • Will they stand firm against efforts to gut U.S. and global anti-poverty programs in next year’s budget?

They need to hear from you that you care about these issues. Otherwise, they will hear something else from other people. You have the opportunity to make a real difference in reducing poverty in the U.S. and around the world. That’s the point of having a voice. To use it when it matters.

TAKE ACTION: Use the August recess to meet with members of Congress and their staff about child poverty, global health, and global education. RESULTS has numerous resources to help you have powerful lobby meetings, including a sample meeting request e-mail, congressional requests on our current issues (e.g. lobby “leave-behinds”), our August recess checklist, and more. Find all our lobbying resources on our Working with Congress page.

Also, RESULTS staff is available to provide you coaching for your lobby meetings. Each Tuesday in August (beginning tonight!), staff will host a Lobby Prep Office Hour from 8:00-9:00 pm ET. Have questions about our requests? Need help with an unresponsive office? Want to practice your presentation? Join us with your questions. Login at: https://results.zoom.us/j/98582131855 or dial (301) 715-8592, meeting ID: 985 8213 1855 (no registration required). And if you prefer one-on-one coaching, contact RESULTS staff to set up a lobby prep call.

Join National Webinar this Saturday with Sophie Collyer and Kenneth Prudencio

We are pleased to announce exciting speakers for August 5 RESULTS National Webinar. For the U.S. Poverty section (1:00-1:30 pm ET), Sophie Collyer from the Center on Poverty and Social Policy will join us to highlight some of their research findings and underscore the need to keep pushing for this Congress to prioritize expanding the Child Tax Credit. For our Global Poverty section (2:00-2:30 pm ET), we’ll welcome Kenneth Prudencio of ASAPSU, our ACTION partner from Cote D’Ivoire. He’ll highlight the importance of our partnership in improving global health through our upcoming Equity and Impact campaign and work with the World Bank. We’ll also continue our discussion on how to make the most of lobby meetings during the August congressional recess (1:30-2:00 pm ET).

TAKE ACTION: Join the RESULTS National Webinar this Saturday, August 5, 1:00-2:30 pm ET. If you have not registered the National Webinar in 2023, register today (you only need register once per year). You will receive your registration confirmation and Zoom login information later this week via e-mail (please check your junk or spam folders if you have not received anything by Friday afternoon). The webinar slides and recording will be available on our National Webinars page.

Quick News on U.S. and Global Poverty

Keep submitting CTC media. Reports are that House Republicans don’t have the votes to move their tax package forward. We know a way they could – expand the Child Tax Credit to more families experiencing poverty. While members of Congress are home, get media published urging your members of Congress to expand the CTC in tax legislation this year to reject any tax bills that don’t. Use our some of common myths about the CTC as a hook to submit your letter today!

The End Tuberculosis Now Act and READ Act need co-sponsorships. Ask your members of Congress to co-sponsor the End Tuberculosis Now Act in both the House (H.R.1776) and the Senate (S.288) as well as the READ Act (H.R.681, S.41), also in both chambers. These are perfect asks for your August recess meetings. The RESULTS website has resources to help you book August meetings, including a sample meeting request letter, a new congressional recess checklist, and more.

Media hooks for the week. Use the hook ideas below to submit a letter to the editor this week. If you need a template, use our online media actions to edit and submit your letter today.

  • U.S. Poverty: See above. And be sure to join Saturday’s RESULTS National Webinar with guest speaker Sophie Collyer who will share new info on the Child Tax Credit to use in letters to the editor.
  • Global Poverty: This piece in Vox from earlier in the year focuses on bipartisan global health work in Congress. Let it inspire you about how effective your advocacy is and then let it ignite your next letter to the editor.
