RESULTS Weekly Update April 7, 2026

April 7, 2026

Quote of the Week

“Congress should support appropriations funding including $1 billion for global tuberculosis funding and $1.5 billion for the Global Fund for fiscal year 2027 . . . The time to address this age-old scourge is now.”

– RESULTS Massachusetts Advocate Leslye Heilig, in a March 24 (World Tuberculosis Day) letter to the editor in the Berkshire (MA) Eagle

Get meetings to counter the President’s budget request

Last Friday, the Trump Administration released its budget proposal for fiscal year 2027 (FY27). It was not pretty. While the request does maintain funding for some of our priorities — such as maintaining the 1:2 funding match for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria — this is the exception, not the rule. The budget cuts overall global health funding nearly in half, which would impact investments in vaccines, TB treatment, maternal and child health, and other areas. In addition, the proposal cuts billions from U.S. anti-poverty programs, including housing assistance, education, nutrition, and heating assistance. The President wants to use these cuts to help pay for a 40 percent increase in military spending. This is bad policy for America and the world.

The good news is that presidential budgets never get enacted as proposed. Just last year, the Trump Administration proposed similar cuts to global and U.S. anti-poverty programs that Congress rejected. Lawmakers rejected those cuts due in part to your advocacy for critical investments that reduce poverty here and abroad. That is why your advocacy is so important right now. Congress must now decide whether to follow the President’s path or chart a different one. Your appropriations requests, your emails to aides, your media, and most importantly, your lobby meetings can push them to make the right choice.

The spring congressional recess comes to an end later this week, so it’s the final few days to snag an in-state meeting with your member(s) of Congress and their staff. Push back against the President’s proposal by making the case for proven, data-driven investments in health care, education, nutrition, and housing. Our “Build a Better Future” campaign page has resources to get you ready for lobby meetings. You can also contact Katie Fleischer to schedule a lobby prep meeting with RESULTS staff. Once you have your meeting, please report what happened, and then celebrate!

Also, please submit all your global health, global education, and U.S. housing appropriations requests into your Senate offices now. The window of opportunity to do so is closing. The Transportation, Health, and Urban Development subcommittee of Appropriations (T-HUD) has an April 20 deadline for submissions. Likewise, the State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs subcommittee of Appropriations (SFOPS) has an April 30 deadline for submissions. Congressional offices will have to submit their requests much earlier than that. You can find all the FY27 appropriations memos on our website. You can also get in-person coaching at this Friday’s Appropriations Forms Office Hour (and stay tuned for info on Senate “Dear Colleague” letters).

Thank you for making your voice heard. You are laying terrific groundwork with congressional offices in making sure they know our priorities for the FY27 budget. Let’s keep it up!
