January 2016 Global Laser Talk: Appropriations
January 2016 Global Laser Talk in EPIC Format
2017 Appropriations
Engage: Working in partnership with developing nations to address the root causes of extreme poverty, the US has helped cut poverty in half since 1990. Our efforts are saving lives and helping partner nations move toward self-sufficiency.
Problem: Though much progress has been made on getting kids in school, reducing preventable child deaths, and addressing killer diseases, our investments are still needed.
Inform: By investing in effect and efficient programs in health and education through the appropriations process, we are developing allies, and supporting developing nations to stand on their own.
Call to Action: Will the Representative/Senator please include the following amounts in his/her request to the Foreign Operations Subcommittee of Appropriations (choose the top one or two)?
- $880 million for Maternal and Child Health, and include in that, $265 million for Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance,
- $230 million for Nutrition in the Global Health line,
- $1.35 billion for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria
- $400 million for scaling up efforts to treat TB and drug-resistant TB
- $125 million for the Global Partnership for Education, and $925 million overall for Basic Education.
I can send you more background information on each.
