Gavi Over the HolidaysAs we move through this festive season, you may find that you have a moment to take a breath and catch up on those one or two things you've put off doing. Is your advocacy one of those things? More specifically, have you gotten a media piece on Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, published yet? Got 30 Minutes? Use the December Action Sheet to write and submit an oped or letter to the editor on Gavi. Gavi offers hope for millions, especially children. That's the kind of story people appreciate at any time of year, but especially at this time of year. So seize this chance. Got 15 Minutes? Check out these great media pitching do's and don't's from Deseret News Senior Editorial Columnist Jay Evensen. Ask the editor of your local newspaper to write about Gavi. Let him/her know that one of the best ways to provide protection from diseases like Ebola is to help poor nations strengthen their healthcare systems, which Gavi does. Send them this great, short background document. Learn more about working with editors on our website. Got 10 Minutes? Will you be seeing friends, family, and colleagues over the next few weeks? As you chat, let them know what you're working on and ask if they, too, would like to participate. They may wish to support your child vaccine work by writing their own letters. Use our handy online tool – share it via e-mail/Facebook/Twitter and follow up with those you know are taking action to see how it went and if they got published. If you want ideas, draw from media other volunteers have already generated. Got 5 Minutes? Think about how a grasstops person of influence in your community (pediatrician, nurse, etc.) could partner with you to co-write a powerful op-ed on Gavi. There's nothing like local expert voices breaking down the issues and helping it hit home. Make sure your community is talking about global immunizations – and send copies of the media you generate to your legislators. |
Gavi Advocacy with Congress: Plan to Book Your First Face-to-Face Meetings and Group Planning Meeting for 2015In a couple of weeks, the new 114th Congress will convene. Make your plan to book face-to-face meetings with the legislators who will be in office in your district and state beginning in 2015. Let Gavi be on their radar early in the session. Remember – new and returning members of Congress will be filling the start of the 2015 schedule with meetings. Why not make one of those meetings a RESULTS meeting focused on the power of Gavi? Find your legislators through our website, or contact Lisa Marchal, Senior Global Grassroots Associate, if you have questions on how to reach a new incoming legislator. Then mark January 10, 2015 in your calendars! Please put January 10 on your calendars – it will be our first national conference call of 2015! It will be an abbreviated call to leave plenty of time for individual and group planning. Use the planning materials provided online and work with fellow advocates and dream up a fantastic advocacy year. What do you want to accomplish? Learn? Change? Contribute? Make plans now to meet with your group or be on the call as a free agent. Saturday, January 10 at 2 p.m. ET is the date, and (888) 409-6709 is the call-in number. |
