September is Here: Don't Let Up on Maternal/Child Health and Other AdvocacyThe current Action Sheet is designed to help you use these waning days of the late summer recess to bring S.1911, the Reach Every Mother and Child Act in the Senate, to the attention of your Senate offices! S.1911 works for the end of preventable maternal, newborn, and child deaths around the world. The bill text is online, and you can also track progress on cosponsorship. (We're first wanting to get 25 cosponsors, 10 of them Republicans, by the end of the year.) This late summer recess ends September 8. So don't hesitate to get into action! Use this time – and this laser talk – to connect with those who speak for you in Congress. Ask your senators for cosponsorship of S.1911. Or ask your representative to become a member of the new International Basic Education Caucus, the TB Elimination Caucus (currently 37 members) and the Global TB Caucus (over 500 parliamentarians currently). And finally, invite folks who are curious about your RESULTS work and care about global health to come along to any local meetings you book! Gearing Up With Fall Maternal/Child Health Media HooksAnnual data on the world's progress in tackling maternal/child health (MCH) will be coming out in mid-September and will be one of our best news hooks of the fall. UNICEF's annual release of their child survival data, the Global Nutrition Report, and the Sustainable Development Goal Summit all happen in September. These are superb reasons to write! This week, a new action sheet will be available to help you write a letter to the editor calling for Congress to get behind support of MCH. Another great media hook, available right now, is the bipartisan House letter to President Obama calling on him to maintain robust support for maternal and child survival programs in his 2017 budget, currently in formation. The recent letter had 105 total signers (including 21 Republicans). It was a true bipartisan showing far exceeding our goal of 60 total signers (including 20 Republicans). Our brand new MCH media toolkit can help you hone local hooks and insert other relevant MCH facts . . . but the most valuable component is your unique voice, used to craft a personal piece that makes the case for the maternal/child health legislation on which we've been working so diligently. Take advantage of the last few weeks of summer and get writing! Board Nominations, Social Media Buzz, and More1. Board Nominations. We are taking nominations for an open grassroots board member seat opening this fall as Beth Wilson, one of our outstanding grassroots board members (who is eligible for re-nomination), finishes her term. Nominations of candidates for the open grassroots board member position must reach the RESULTS office by Tuesday, September 15. We are encouraging participation from across the breadth of our organization. Candidates for the grassroots board members must be engaged in an active RESULTS group. Candidates can be nominated by others or can nominate themselves. Please email your nomination to [email protected] or call (202) 783-4800 x152. 2. #Savemomsandkids. That's the Twitter hashtag where a lot of maternal/child health conversation is happening. 3. Have You Seen the Photos from the 2015 International Conference? Take a look at these shining faces! 4. Looking for Powerful Stories on the Impact of Girls' Education? Look no further. Group Leader Training: We're Saving a Seat for YouAre you a current or incoming RESULTS group leader for a global campaigns group? Then this opportunity is just for you! These training retreats, to be repeated several times over the next year and highlighting our global health campaign work and group leader best practices, will help both veteran and soon-to-be group leaders sharpen their skills, gain even more confidence in their leadership, and build relationships and rapport with fellow leaders.
