Weekly Update | Week of August 21, 2017

Quote of the Week

"I've always been inspired by my family and community to advocate for what's right. Working with RESULTS made me realize that I don't have to wait until after I receive my college degree to take action and use that passion to help change the world."

– Dina Alsaffar, RESULTS Advocate

Ask Your Representative to Support Global Education Through H.Res. 466

There is a global crisis in education. 263 million kids who should be in grade, middle, or high school are not. And many others with some school still can't read because of poor quality education. The data seems dire, but this is a vast improvement over how it was 10 years ago, and the US has been key in that progress. We must ensure that the US continues to lead on global education. We can do this by educating our representatives on the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), and getting them to voice their support for it. Here are actions you can take:

Use our online action to ask your representative to cosponsor House Resolution 466, "Supporting the role of the United States in promoting children's access to quality education in the poorest countries through the Global Partnership for Education (GPE)." You can write an email, Tweet at them, and post on their Facebook page using our online action.

Thanks to your incredible advocacy, there are currently 18 cosponsors (including originator Rep. David Reichert of Washington state) on H.Res. 466 supporting the Global Partnership for Education. Is your representative on the list? Get a "yes" answer from them during the August recess and let us know.

Current House Cosponsors: Reichert, Clay, Conyers, Donovan, Fitzpatrick, Gallego, Heck, Herrera Beutler, Holmes Norton, Larsen, Lowey, Napolitano, Lowey, Messer, Ross, Ryan, Soto, Thompson, Yarmuth

Extra credit: We also need a lead Republican for the Senate version of the resolution. Will one of your senators lead? We can support you in making this ask.

Have You Gotten Published Recently?

Use our August Action Sheet on Writing a letter to the editor on GPE to write and submit a letter to the editor, educating the public, and calling on your representative to take action. It's back-to-school time, so it's the perfect time for you to sharpen your pencil or fire up your laptop and get writing!

Gather Your Community for a Powerful Outreach Meeting

You've got inspiring tales of empowerment and success to tell, and people will want to be part of what you're up to. Plus, we're making our way toward our 2017 goal of 500 outreach events. From setting up a coffee with a prospective advocate to a full outreach event, use your creativity to share about the "Voices That Change the World." Use the July Action Sheet and companion meeting guide if you want to write your members of Congress about the Global Partnership for Education. Or use the new August Action Sheet and companion meeting guide if you'd like to take action by writing your local paper.

Follow Up on Successes in the Senate!

1. Senate Passes READ Act. Your advocacy was a key part of a long-sought victory. RESULTS applauds the Senate for passing the READ Act, legislation that will improve the lives of millions of children around the world who don’t have access to a quality education. The READ Act (Reinforcing Education Accountability in Development Act, H.R.601) will ensure that U.S. investments in global basic education are having the greatest impact, while also advancing quality education services for children affected by conflict or emergencies. In addition, the bill will strengthen the accountability and transparency of global education programs to ensure that every dollar is spent wisely. Read more about this spectacular victory – and what the next steps are – in our newsroom.

2. Reach Every Mother and Child Act. On August 2, the Reach Every Mother and Child Act (S.1730) was reintroduced in the Senate. In the words of our executive director, Joanne Carter, "“The opportunity and the imperative to help end preventable child and maternal deaths can unite us across borders and across party lines.” Read more on our blog. Use our laser talk to call and ask your Senators to cosponsor S.1730.
