Global Poverty Campaigns

Weekly Update | Week of September 24, 2018

Quote of the Week

"This fall as Congress is negotiating a final budget for TB, I hope they’ll follow the House’s lead with the desperately needed – and long overdue – $40 million funding increase. It’s a step in the direction."

– Molly Higbie, REAL Change Fellow, in the New Haven (CT) Register (September 23, 2018)

Quick Action

Take Action: Write Your Local Paper About TB Using New WHO Data

Top Actions: TB Appropriations Work Yet to Do

Make a Champion-Level Ask of Your Senators and Reps. Regarding TB Funding. Funding for the end of the scourge of TB – a disease of poverty – is still under debate. We began making a champion-level ask of our legislators during the July International Conference, and we continue still. Here is the question to pose to your senators and representative: Will you speak with the leadership of the State/Foreign Operations (SFOPS) subcommittee of Appropriations and urge them to support the higher FY19 House funding level of $302 million to fight global TB in any final spending bill?

Do You Have 15 Minutes? Use Those Minutes to Get Published on TB. Take our online action, which includes new, compelling WHO data, and submit your new letter to the editor to your local paper. It's not long now until the September 26 UN High-Level Meeting (HLM) on TB – we will be watching the outcomes as continuing context for our continued work on TB appropriations. So media work is timely! Then share the link with a friend or fellow advocate and ask them to do the same.

UN High-Level Meeting on TB September 26

Read More on the Context of the UN High-Level Meeting. A blog post by TB Advocacy Officer David Bryden lays out more about what's at stake, what the opportunities are, and what may transpire as the HLM approaches. Keep in mind – the excellent work you did on Senate and House letters to the Administration in advance of the HLM is being leveraged. Those letters made their way to the Administration, and the U.S. is preparing its delegation. The voices of those who want to eradicate TB are being heard.

  • Sample Tweet #2: Heads of state will gather in #NewYork on September 26 for the #UNHLMTB to drive comprehensive efforts to end #TB, the world’s leading infectious killer #EndTB

The Reach Act: Can We Reach Half of Congress?

Names on the waitlist to be added as cosponsors to the Reach Act have been released, so we have impressive numbers of cosponsors at this point. As of September 24, there are 199 names on the House version of the bill and 48 on the Senate version. Can we reach 218 in House and 50 in the Senate? During this crowded time of year, we must continue to push this important legislation to the front, growing the list of cosponsors so that the call for support for this live-saving legislation is loud and clear.

Ask your senator(s) or representative to support maternal and child health by cosponsoring the Reach Act today.

The 2018 Mid-Term Elections: Harness People's Passion

Your work getting our poverty issues in front of candidates signals that we're in it for the long haul. Some of these candidates will transform into legislators, and they will need to continue to hear from us, in our non-partisan manner, on issues of extreme poverty. In a sense, our work is just beginning. Those motivated by these times may be inspired to know there's no expiration date on this level of engagement.
