Tax package containing a Child Tax Credit expansion passes in the House of Representatives, RESULTS urges the Senate to swiftly do the same

The bipartisan Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act of 2024 passed by an overwhelming majority in the House, clearing a path for its passage for the 2023 filing season if the Senate acts soon.

Washington DC, February 1, 2024—Yesterday, the House of Representatives voted to pass a bipartisan tax package that includes an expansion of the Child Tax Credit (CTC) in a decisive vote of 357-70. The Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act of 2024 expands the CTC over the next three years so that more families with low incomes — including those with multiple children — can access the full credit amount.

RESULTS Director of U.S. Poverty Policy, TaShon Thomas, said, “Thanks in part to the work of our dedicated grassroots advocates and coalition partners, we are now one step closer to equipping more families earning low incomes with the tools to gain more financial stability. While this package falls short of reaching all families of the 19 million children living in poverty, we applaud House lawmakers for coming together across party lines to unlock resources that will surely reduce child poverty. RESULTS supports the swift passage of this tax package as we continue to work toward a fully equitable CTC.”

Since the COVID-era CTC expansion lapsed, 19 million children in poverty lost access to the full credit, which their families overwhelmingly spent on food, shelter, school supplies, and other basic needs. The CTC expansion in this legislation would ensure that 16 million of these children would see some increase in their benefit, and the families of 500,000 more children would have the tools to lift themselves above the poverty line.

RESULTS Executive Director, Dr. Joanne Carter reiterated, “Passing this legislation now will make a vital, tangible difference for many families negotiating inflation, the affordable housing crisis, and other devastating effects of poverty and oppression.”

RESULTS now urges the Senate to follow suit and swiftly pass Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act in time for the 2023 filing season as an important step toward economic justice.
