RESULTS celebrates the life and work of Nita Lowey

Washington, D.C., March 19, 2025—RESULTS is deeply saddened by the passing of Congresswoman Nita Lowey. We remain inspired by her legacy fighting for the needs and rights of all people, but especially women and girls. Here in the U.S. and globally she dedicated herself to ensuring access to health care and education for communities facing the harshest barriers. She moved us closer to a world where women and girls can thrive and control their own destinies.

Nita Lowey believed every child has the right to a quality education. She insisted that girls, children with disabilities, and those from the most marginalized communities must come first and not last. With her tenacity and leadership, she transformed U.S. efforts in global basic education, and RESULTS was an immensely proud partner with her. She worked for a decade to finally see the passage of the READ Act that finally authorized the basic education program at USAID into law and strengthened the impact of U.S. efforts in global education. She helmed the House State, Foreign Operations Subcommittee, and was the first woman to chair the House Appropriations Committee. Under her leadership, the funding for international basic education grew ten-fold, and the U.S. became a key supporter of the Global Partnership for Education. The number of out-of-school kids globally continued to drop. She was an important leader in global health and reproductive rights. Here at home, she also championed childcare, and key programs like Head Start.

She was beloved by the RESULTS national network of volunteer advocates, and she generously celebrated many wins with us. Every time she thanked our grassroots volunteers, she also urged us to keep advocating with Congress. She said to keep fighting for the world we want for every child. May her dedication and spirit continue to inspire us to raise our voices. Her memory will drive us to fight for programs that create positive impact for millions and act in solidarity with communities here and around the world.
