Current reconciliation package would be catastrophic for everyday people, especially children

Details released this week by key congressional committees reveal a reconciliation package that guts the programs helping people meet critical basic needs.

Washington, D.C., May 14, 2025—Proposals released this week by congressional committees constitute sweeping harm to everyday people in the name of tax breaks for the wealthy. The proposed cuts would decimate programs that especially serve children. Health care, nutrition assistance, and other tools to meet basic needs hang in the balance. RESULTS urges Congress to reject this reconciliation legislation.

“The proposal for expanding the Child Tax Credit completely fails to help working families earning the lowest wages,” said RESULTS Executive Director Joanne Carter. “There is no increase in refundability. So, families who need it most get no added benefit. Meanwhile, families making as much as $400,000 per year would get the full expanded credit. What’s more, this proposal will exclude millions of U.S. citizen children from the benefit. If a child has even one parent without a Social Security Number, they are disqualified from the credit. This is unacceptable and a betrayal of shared American values.”

The massive cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) are nothing short of a catastrophe. “This would be the largest cut to SNAP in history,” said Carter. “Millions of people will lose access to nutritious food. And since 62 percent of SNAP benefits go to households with children, this would literally take the food out of children’s mouths to fund tax cuts for the wealthy.”

The changes to Medicaid will create irreparable harm. Millions of people will lose access to health care. Millions more would pay higher fees, impacting their ability to afford other basic needs like food and rent. “Once again, this bill disproportionately robs children of essential services, with 49 percent of U.S. kids enrolled in Medicaid,” continued Carter. “Cuts to both SNAP and Medicaid come in part through stricter work requirements and eligibility criteria that create a complex bureaucratic burden. These new administrative burdens are not designed to help people find work. They are designed to kick people off assistance. It is weaponized red tape, and it balloons government waste.”

“Poverty, ill health, and hunger will increase because of this bill,” said Carter, “and children will bear the brunt of the damage. There are also proposals throughout this bill that egregiously target specific groups in our community including women, LGBTQIA+ people, people with disabilities, and especially immigrants and their relatives. RESULTS stands with our community, and we call on Congress to reject this ruinous reconciliation package.”
