Global Poverty Weekly Update September 23, 2019
Quote of the Week
“ . . . [P]rogress on AIDS wasn’t an accident.”
~ Dave Egan, RESULTS Ohio advocate, issuing a call to action in the Akron Beacon Journal (Sept. 17, 2019)
WE HAVE 4 DAYS. Take Action Today on Global Fund H.RES. 517 and S. RES. 318
We have about four working days to make the H.Res. 517 and the S.Res. 318 cosponsorship lists as long as possible before the Global Fund replenishment. Congress will begin its recess on September 30. As of September 20, we had 62 names on the House resolution and 6 on the Senate version.
Will you act today?
These resolutions in the House and Senate call for continued U.S. leadership on Global Fund, which will help save an additional 16 million lives over the next three years and move the world closer to ending AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria once and for all.
Why are we so passionate about this? The Global Fund recently its annual report, upping the number of lives saved since 2002 to 32 million. The incredible work on the Global Fund must not slow.
Recently, the Senate Appropriations Committee made this statement: “The Committee recommends $1,560,000,000 for a U.S. contribution to the Global Fund. In advance of the Global Fund Replenishment Conference in 2019, the Committee anticipates that the United States will pledge not less than this amount for each of the three fiscal years pertaining to the Global Fund’s Sixth Replenishment. The Committee does not support the administration’s proposal to amend the longstanding matching rates for U.S. contributions to the Global Fund and expects the United States to continue to match other donor contributions at a rate of $1 for every $2 received from other donors.”
We must keep up the pressure to see that positive intention becomes reality.
