Global Fund Sign-On Letter Laser Talk
Hi, this is xxx from RESULTS. Happy 2019. I hope you had a chance to relax over the holidays, though I know things have been challenging in DC with the shutdown.
Engage: I’m calling you about one of the first bipartisan efforts under way in the House in 2019. It is a sign-on letter to the Secretary of State on the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria being led by Reps. Barbara Lee and Chris Smith.
Problem: The Global Fund has saved an estimated 27 million lives since its creation in 2002, and working with PEPFAR and other US and global initiatives, deaths from the three diseases have been cut by 1/3. But that still leaves a lot of people at risk of death from diseases we know how to prevent, and in the cases of TB and malaria, cure.
Inform: In October the Global Fund is convening an international replenishment conference in France to seek funding for the next 3 years of critical work (2020-2022). The US has been a driver of and a leader behind the Global Fund’s success. The bipartisan letter calls on the Administration to make a bold pledge, 3-year pledge to the Global Fund.
Call to Action: Will the Representative please sign on to this letter to let the Secretary of State know that Congress is backs continued US leadership on the Global Fund? I can send you a copy of the letter—it outlines numerous reasons that this is important to the US and the world. It closes on January 17.
