RESULTS Laser Talk
Engage: Do you know that nearly 50 million people are living in poverty here in the United States and that more than two billion people live on less than $2 a day worldwide?
Problem: Yet when people think about ending poverty, they feel overwhelmed by the size of the problem or disillusioned with government’s ability to help?
Inform: I’ve learned that we don’t have to feel that way. I volunteer with a grassroots organization called RESULTS. RESULTS' mission is to create the political will to end poverty by empowering people like you and me to use our personal and political power for change. Through RESULTS, I’ve learned that poverty is a problem I can help solve. RESULTS has educated me on practical solutions to poverty; trained me on how to write and speak powerfully about these issues with lawmakers, the media, and in my community; and given me the tools to take action that makes a difference. But most of all RESULTS has given me hope. Since getting involved, I no longer feel powerless to make positive change in the world.
Call to Action: I think you would find RESULTS inspiring to and I’d like to invite you to get involved (choose the request below that best fits the situation).
Request #1: Our local RESULTS group is hosting an event in April that is designed for people just like you; people who don’t know much about RESULTS but want to learn more. We’re still working out the details, which I can follow up with you about. If that date works in your schedule, would you attend our April event?
Request #2: Our local RESULTS group meets each month to take action on our issues. Our next meeting is __________________. We always welcome new people to attend. If you like it, great; if not, that’s OK too (but I think you will). Would you come to our next meeting on ______________?
Request #3: RESULTS hosts Introductory calls each month for people wanting to learn more about our work. The calls last 30-45 minutes and give you a great overview of RESULTS and how to get involved. The calls are generally the 2nd Wednesday at 9:00 pm ET and the last Friday at 1:00 pm ET each month. Would you like to join one of those calls? You can register for an upcoming call at: https://results.org/take_action/become_a_results_activist/.
What Is a Laser Talk?
A laser talk serves as a useful starting point for your advocacy work, whether as a talking points during a town hall meeting or as a primer for face-to-face meetings with candidates and elected officials. Follow up with more information and evidence supporting your points. And of course, adapt a laser talk to reflect your own experiences and why you care about the issue! For more on how to create your own laser talk, see the RESULTS Activist Toolkit: Create and Deliver Your EPIC Laser Talk.
