Global Poverty Campaigns

Weekly Update | Week of August 13, 2018

Quote of the Week

"It is in the interest of the U.S. that this High-Level Meeting succeed. The U.S. should remain a strong global leader in providing funding for effective TB programs and research, and not just sustain but expand its commitment. We stand ready to work with you to leverage the unprecedented opportunities for faster progress against TB presented by the High-Level Meeting."

Senate Letter to the Administration on UN High-Level Meetings on TB in September

Quick Action

Take Action: Ask Your Senators to Sign the Letter to the Administration on the UN High-Level Meeting on TB

Someone New Expresses Interest in RESULTS–What do you do?

We find new people when we table at events, do trainings, and go to town halls. After your initial conversation, invite them to check out our Welcome Series. The series will inform them about RESULTS in an inspiring way and get them started taking simple actions via a four-part email series. Even if someone is already a little familiar with RESULTS and receiving our actions and communications, you can go through the series at their own pace here. Let us help you engage new people!

Top Action: Mobilize the Senate on TB!

You did great work on the House TB letter to the Administration garnering 106 signers. Great work! Thank your Reps. Now we need our Senators to sign on to their letter to the Administration.

Getting our Senators to sign on to the Brown, Young, Cantwell, Sullivan letter to the Administration on the UN High-Level Meetings on TB will do two things: 1) Send a message to the Administration that TB leadership at the first-ever UN High-Level Meegings on TB is important to Congress, and 2) Build our base of TB supporters in the Senate. The letter closes on August 31. Here are your actions and tools. Do at least on, ideally more than one.

  • Contact the Foreign Policy Aide in your Senators' offices ank the Senators to sign-on to the letter to the Adminstration on the UN High-Level Meetings on TB in September. You can find a copy of the letter to send them here (read it–it's very good).
  • Use the August Action Sheet & Letter-Writing Guide to guide people in writing letters to your Senators on the TB letter. You can deliver the letters in person or during a town hall meeting.
  • Take action using our online Action Alert and share it with others so they can take action with your Senators on TB.

If you want to know why we are fighting for TB, listen to civil society voices and stories from around the world (very powerful). Also, check out our blog detailing our efforts on TB and the UN High-Level Meetings.

RESULTS and the 2018 Mid-Term Elections

The 2018 midterms will present exciting opportunities to engage members of Congress, and ensure candidates learn about our issues before they ever get to Washington. If you are interested in talking to candidates this fall, sign up here and Carly Pildis, Senior Associate for Advocacy and Organizing, will reach out to you with opportunities ideas, and training! She can also guide you in training people in your community.

For more support resources, check out a new section on our website, RESULTS and the 2018 Election! The training slides from the August National Webinar are also very helpful.

The Reach Act: Keep Pushing for Cosponsors

We are committed to getting this legislation passed. Let's keep going!

As of August 13, 192 representatives from 44 states (88% of states) and DC have cosponsored the Reach Every Mother and Child Act (H.R.4022), 32 senators from 26 states (52% of states) have cosponsored the Senate version of the bill (S.1730). Great work! But we must go further.

The Reach Act will make U.S. efforts on maternal and child health the best they can be through coordination, efficiency, and bold goals. We need to keep the momentum going through cosponsorship. Get senators and representatives to cosponsor the Reach Act, and if they are already cosponsors, move them up the Champion Scale by asking them to advocate for and lead on the issue.

International Conference Still a Rich Resource

Here are some of things YOU can do to mine the International Conference

  • Share Pics of Advocacy in Action. Steve Arnold of RESULTS Bloomington sent photos of their congressional meetings to his local Action Network, and let them know that their handwritten letters got delivered and made an impact. Find other photos of the IC here.
  • Alert Local Media of Your Time in DC. Craig Roshaven of RESULTS Fort Worth sent a press release to his local paper about his time in Washington which prompted them to invite him to write an op-ed. (We can all reach out to our papers and offer to write.)
  • Highlighting What the IC Was All About. Ann Erdman of RESULTS Cheyenne invited her group to come together and hear about the IC, watch a video of one of our keynote speakers. Check out daily summaries on our blog from July 14, 15, 16, 17 for more ideas.
  • Follow up on IC Requests at Town Halls. Check townhall schedules in August and beyond.
  • Use the International Conference resources page for copies of policy briefs, requests, and other resources.
  • Don't Forget to Report! Fill out this short report form for each meeting you held on the Hill. It will help us track progress and next steps.
