Global Poverty Campaigns

Weekly Update | Week of April 30, 2018

Quote of the Week

"Rep. Ed Royce, a Republican from California, and the chairman of the committee, said the cuts were regrettable and would impact U.S. priorities from combating terrorists, poachers, and human traffickers, to addressing global health threats, supporting electoral processes and democracy, and responding to the dramatic humanitarian needs. 'These efforts should not be shorted,' he said."

Quick Action

Take Action: Ask Your Senators to Cosponsor the Reach Every Mother and Child Act

2018 International Conference: Why We Need to Be There

The July 14-17 International Conference (IC) is one of the last big moments to make real progress on our issues before Congress leaves for the August recess and turns its attention to November elections. Before they are distracted they must take action to protect FY19 global health and education programs, and move the Reach Every Mother and Child Act toward passage. We'll get this done by being in Washington in force. Make sure your group, your state, your district are represented!

Give people the opportunity to become the powerful change makers they want to become by inviting widely and often. If current advocates are struggling to afford the trip to DC, encourage them to get help through the IC Gap Fund for Global Advocates. Our advocates are our most important asset and we believe in investing in you!

Other IC Items
  • Are You on Twitter? Share about the conference using this sample tweet: Join a thriving community of advocates from every corner of the country and around the world as they learn together and head to Capitol Hill. Come to the RESULTS International Conference in July! #Voices4RESULTS www.resultsconference.org.
  • Are You a Young Emerging Leader? Do You Know One? The REAL Change Organizing and Advocacy Fellowship to Fight Poverty is open for application, but only for another month. This learning opportunity designed for emerging leaders aged 18-30 may be ideal for you or someone you know.
  • RESULTS Merchandise. RESULTS now has an online, branded merchandise store!

May is a Time to Improve the Lives of Moms

May is a time to acknowledge moms and make sure they have what they need. We'll celebrate moms throughout May with two major activities:

1. Creating Momentum to Pass the Reach Act. The Reach Every Mother and Child Act (HR4022, S1730) will make US efforts on maternal and child health the best they can be through coordination, efficiency, and bold goals. It's time to pass this legislation. Here's what you can do:

  • Get senators and representatives to cosponsor the Reach Act. If they are already cosponsors, move them up the Champion Scale and ask them to Advocate and Lead. Use the Reach Act #LettersGetLOUD Outreach Guide and Action Sheet to mobilze your community. Gather letters for district and state meetings, and to bring to the IC.
  • Use the new Reach Act Editorial Packet to get editors to write and to craft your own Mother's Day opeds and LTEs

2. Raising Funds to Support RESULTS' Advocacy for Moms. The RESULTS Spring Friends & Family Fundraising Campaign will take place during the entire month of May. Join the kickoff webinar on May 3 at 8:30 p.m. ET for all the tools and encouragement you need. Log in to http://fuze.me/37000190, or dial (408) 610-1042, meeting ID 37000190. You have lots to be proud of and lots to share with friends and family that might be having a hard time finding good news. Now may also be a better time to raise funds than in the fall during elections.

Great Work on Senate Appropriations!

The time to work on Senate Dear Colleague letters was limited, but you made the most of it. Many of you asked your Senators to submit their written requests a long time ago so that when the Senate Dear Colleague letters came out, you were ready to pounce! Find a list of all of the signers and copies of all of the signed letters here. The work you did here was critical for protecting global health and education programs. Congratulations! Here are a couple of things you can do to make the most of your advocacy:

  • Let your advocates, letter writers, action network members, and donors know that, in spite of what they hear in the news, there are places Republicans and Democrats are working together to make the world a better place. This would be a good Friends and Family fundraising pitch.
  • Thanks your members of Congress who took action on appropriations (either by submitting written requests or signing Dear Colleague letters). Do it during in-person meetings or in a letter to the editor. Ask them to continue to protect these programs and to move the Reach Act toward passage this year.
  • Let members of Congress who did not take action on appropriations know that it would be helpful for them to speak to the chair and ranking member of the State and Foreign Operations Subcommittee of Appropriations (SFOPS) in favor of robust funding for these programs.

RESULTS Grassroots Board Member Nominations Open
