Global Poverty Campaigns

Weekly Update | Week of March 5, 2018

Quote of the Week

"In 2015, 193 countries, together with the World Bank and the United Nations (UN), committed to one of the most ambitious goals in human history: 'By 2030, nobody will live in extreme poverty, anywhere in the world.' Audacious as this objective may seem, it is imperative that we achieve it for our collective well-being and continued global progress."

Quick Action

Take Action: Write a Letter to the Editor Rejecting Cuts to Foreign Assistance

Leading with Action: FY19 Appropriations Requests and Sign-ons Window Closing

We have two key ways we weigh in on the budget process every year: funding level requests and sign-on letters which emphasize the importance of a spending area/issue. This is the time to make your final requests, as the window of opportunity is closing.

Each year, every member of Congress has the opportunity to weigh in on our nation’s priorities through the appropriations process. Moreover, each year, RESULTS weighs in as well. This appropriations season, urge Congress to voice their support on issues that build the foundation to end poverty – health, education, and economic opportunity. Keep reading, then take action today!

1. Funding level requests:

  • Take a look at our FY19 Appropriations memos outlining each of our requests: child health and nutrition; tuberculosis; the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria; and the Global Partnership for Education. Use our current action sheet and laser talk designed to help you make your requests and to enlist others into action via an education and action meeting. We have learned that the Foreign Operations Subcommittee of Appropriations (SFOPS) has set a deadline of March 16 to receive input from other representatives on FY19 spending levels. This means that your representatives will set their deadline to hear from you well before that deadline. This is the time to make your final requests.

2. Sign-on lettersA “sign-on” letter (also called a “Dear Colleague” letter) is like a petition in Congress. Sign-on letters are circulated by champions in Congress to ask other members to join them in showing their support for an issue. Sign-on letters are starting to be available for the support of your legislators, but the timeframe for getting signers on is always quite short. As of today, we have the following letters available for signatures:

#LettersGetLOUD Campaign

Dynamic. Creative. Bold. Now is the time to get LOUD!

The #LettersGetLOUD campaign is designed to help you enhance the impact of your meetings with members of Congress while inspiring others and growing our movement in 2018. Advocates are organizing their communities to write letters to members of Congress about ending poverty. These letters are being hand-delivered while meeting with our members of Congress. Through the campaign, we'll also hear your voices through the reading of these letters via videos shared on social media. (Check out the hashtag #LettersGetLOUD on Twitter.)

Go to our #LettersGetLOUD page for complete support materials, including a campaign guide, tips on reaching out to your community, materials you can order to enhance your outreach/letter-writing meeting, and other helps.
