Weekly Update | Week of July 31, 2017

Quote of the Week

"I became an advocate with RESULTS because together we take actions to effect change in the world. It is very satisfying when I see a piece of legislation passed, or an appropriation request funded after having advocated for it."

– Howard Berkowitz, RESULTS Asheville advocate

Celebrating Successes in the Senate!

1. Senate Passes READ Act. Your advocacy was a key part of a long-sought victory. RESULTS applauds the Senate for passing the READ Act, legislation that will improve the lives of millions of children around the world who don’t have access to a quality education. The READ Act (Reinforcing Education Accountability in Development Act, H.R. 601) will ensure that U.S. investments in global basic education are having the greatest impact, while also advancing quality education services for children affected by conflict or emergencies. In addition, the bill will strengthen the accountability and transparency of global education programs to ensure that every dollar is spent wisely. Read more about this spectacular victory – and what the next steps are – in our newsroom.

2. Reach Every Mother and Child Act. Keep an eye on this page – by the end of the week, we're expecting to share some exciting news about progress on the Reach Act in the Senate.

What to Work on Next

1. House Resolution 466 on the Global Partnership for Education. Thanks in part to your incredible advocacy, there are currently 13 signers (including originator Rep. David Reichert of Washington state) on H.Res. 466 supporting the Global Partnership for Education. Is your representative on the list?

Reichert, Clay, Conyers, Fitzpatrick, Gallego, Herrera Beutler, Holmes Norton, Larsen, Lowey, Napolitano, Lowey, Messer, Ryan, Soto, Yarmuth

Keep those requests going out to your representatives so that we can significantly up that number when the House is comes back from recess. Check out the Town Hall Project to see where your legislators will be during August.

2. Report Your International Conference Hill Meetings. Take a few moments to make sure the outcomes of your fabulous work on the Hill are recorded so we can build on what you achieved.

3. Use the July or August Action Sheet. You've got inspiring tales of empowerment and success to tell, and people will want to be part of what you're up to. Plus, we're making our way toward our 2017 goal of 500 outreach events. From setting up a coffee with a prospective advocate to a full oureach event, and other options in between, use your creativity to share about the "Voices That Change the World." Use the July Action Sheet and companion meeting guide if you want to write your members of Congress about the Global Partnership for Education and make that activity your event focus. Or use the new August Action Sheet and companion meeting guide if you'd like to take action by writing your local paper.

RESULTS International Conference Recap

1. Letter to the Editor. Why not let your local papers know that you went to DC to speak up for the end of extreme poverty, that you sent letters to be hand-delivered to DC offices, or that you dialed in to a meeting from home? In this climate of reinvigorated civic engagement, you may be the story they are looking for!

2. Leaders for Action. By the end of the conference, we had a group of generous donors who had stepped up to create our Leaders for Action Matching Fund. All donations made through the end of 2017 will be matched dollar for dollar up to $100,000! Donate today.

3. Grassroots Board Election. Both on our blog and at the conference, advocates have had a chance to hear about our Grassroots Board member candidates. Don't miss the opportunity to vote for two fellow RESULTS volunteers to represent the grassroots on the boards of RESULTS and RESULTS Educational Fund. This is a very important decision and we have great candidates. Now, we just need your vote by August 9Find information on the candidates and how to vote on our blog.

4. Debut of New RESULTS Video. RESULTS is a movement of passionate, committed, everyday people. Together we use our voices to influence political decisions that will bring an end to poverty. See YOUR voices in action in this inspiring video.
