Global Weekly Update January 3, 2011

January 3, 2011

Join Us Saturday for a Conference Call on 2011 Goals

Join us this Saturday, January 8, for our first global national conference call of the year! We’ll discuss our goals and strategies for achieving funding and enacting critical policies to fight global poverty, including appropriations, key education legislation, and child survival. While the political landscape may seem daunting, we know that some of our finest work has been accomplished in the unlikeliest of times. Be part of Saturday’s call to gain strategies as well as inspiration.

The call is at 2:00 pm ET on this Saturday, January 8. To join, call (888) 409-6709.

Start 2011 with a Strategic Plan to Achieve Your Goals

Now is the time to tend to some housekeeping left over from 2010 — a wonderful excuse to celebrate all that we’ve accomplished together! Have you reported all of your great advocacy actions for 2010? Have a quick conversation with your group leader now so you can get your year-end benchmarking completed. And while you are at it, why not take the time to plan your next meetings for January? Essential group planning materials (planning form, guide to the planning process) have already been shared with group leaders, and more will come this month; have you booked a planning date with your group? Also, take note of upcoming 2011 opportunities listed in the weekly update calendar, including the monthly national conference call (January 8), a power-mapping training call (January 12), and a new activist orientation series (beginning in February). Put those dates into your calendar and be ready to hit the ground running.

Power-Mapping Training Call Wednesday, January 12

What’s power-mapping? Why should you do it? Join us for this interesting call about leveraging your connections for more time-efficent and effective advocacy. 9:00 pm ET. Call (712) 432-3100, passcode 761262.

2011 Campaign Goals and Appropriations Actions Coming Soon

Be on the lookout for our 2011 campaign goals and appropriations actions. We will also review them during the conference call this Saturday.

As teenagers, there are a lot of things we can’t control. We can’t vote, school restricts our freedoms, socially things are . . . well drama is turbulent by definition. But that doesn’t mean we can’t have an impact on the world. Too much of our time is spent running around when we could be making a difference. All it takes is a little initiative toward a cause and things happen. I used to think I couldn’t do anything except homework and sports, but after a slight push from my mother, I realized exactly the potential and influence a teenager can have. In the course of one day this summer while at the RESULTS International Conference in Washington, D.C., I met with three representatives of my state and discussed ways they could impact pressing issues in the world. It’s not the easiest thing to look a politician in the eye and ask them for their support, but the second you walk out of that office, you know without a doubt that you’ve done something right.
