RESULTS calls on the House of Representatives to stop the deeply harmful reconciliation package passed today by the Senate

Earlier today, the Senate passed a domestic policy bill that would end critical health care and food programs for millions. The House must stop the bill from becoming law.

Washington, D.C., July 1, 2025—In a 50-50 vote requiring a tiebreaker cast by Vice President J.D. Vance, the Senate voted to advance the reconciliation package. This legislation amounts to a catastrophe for everyday people in the U.S. In May, the House of Representatives passed a version of the same bill. The House version rips away health care and food supports from millions. Many hoped the Senate version would mitigate that harm. Instead, the Senate made it worse. RESULTS calls on the House to remember their duty to their constituents and stop this immensely damaging bill from becoming law.

“RESULTS applauds all the Senators who stood against this disastrous legislation, making the vote as close as it was,” said RESULTS Executive Director, Joanne Carter. “Advocates have shared in congressional meetings and in the media that this bill in no way reflects the will of the people. The Senate reconciliation package is hostile to children, families, and the very values that unite us as a country. The House of Representatives must vote down this legislation now.”

The Senate both preserved many harmful provisions from the House version and added new ones. Parents with children will have new, onerous work requirements to keep health care under Medicaid and food assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). “Data continues to prove that work requirements do not boost employment,” continued Carter. “Instead, they end benefits for people who need them to survive by creating costly red tape. In the case of these new requirements, not only working age adults but children will get sicker and go hungry.”

The Child Tax Credit (CTC) still does not reach any of the 17 million kids left out of the full credit because their parents earn too little. In fact, the Senate reduced the CTC expansion even for higher earners that the House originally proposed.

“This bill is poised to be historic for its unrelenting cruelty and harm,” said Carter. “For the first time in history, states would have to shoulder expenses for SNAP food assistance. Projections show this will end access to nutritious food for millions. The cuts to Medicaid will be the biggest since the program began. They will decimate rural hospitals, elder care, and communities. This bill codifies prejudice and takes aim at members of our community. We call on the House to make this moment historic for a better reason. Let this be the moment that lawmakers and advocates come together to take a stand for the welfare of everyday people. The House must vote no on the reconciliation package.”
