Quote of the Week

“Families and children are suffering every day because of the TB pandemic. It is about time that House leadership takes action and passes the End TB Now Act.”

We need your media to push back at safety net threats

We know that early next year, the Trump Administration and Republican leaders in Congress will push to pass a major tax bill. The news is that they want to move quickly. This is a big reason we are urging you to generate letters to the editor and op-eds now urging leaders to expand the Child Tax Credit (CTC) and the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). The more they hear that constituents want these credits expanded for people experiencing poverty, the better chance expansions will be included.

Now we have learned that they may use the tax bill to cut key programs we support, including SNAP and Medicaid. Additional work requirements and spending caps are being discussed. SNAP and Medicaid are two of our most successful anti-poverty programs. SNAP helps 40 million people, most of them families with children, seniors, or persons with disabilities, buy groceries each month. Medicaid helps over 100 million Americans get access to health care. Cutting these programs to finance tax cuts for the wealthy would not only be devastating for millions, but morally indefensible.

This is why your advocacy is so important right now. Not only to pursue opportunities to make meaningful steps forward, like expanding the CTC and EITC or passing the End TB Now Act, but also to oppose harmful cuts and changes to programs that help millions make ends meet.

TAKE ACTION: Submit your next letter to the editor today urging Congress protect SNAP, expand the CTC/EITC and to pass the End TB Now Act. The more letters and op-eds you generate, the harder you make it for Congress to ignore these important issues. As part of our Double/50 media campaign, you’ve gotten 129 pieces published in 29 states so far. Help us reach our goal of 300 media pieces covering all 50 states by the end of the year. You can find letter to the editor templates and media hooks in the Double/50 Campaign media hooks tracker. And please let us know when you get published by completing our media report form.

(You added 3 new states in the last week! Here are the 21 states where we still need media: AL, AK, AR, CO, DE, GA, ID, KS, KY, LA, MD, MS, MT, NH, NJ, NY, ND, RI, SD, VA, WI)

Quick News on U.S. and Global Poverty

Help pass the End Tuberculosis (TB) Now Act. The 118th Congress has just a few weeks left before it adjourns. It is essential they pass the End TB Now Act (H.R. 1776) before they leave. This legislation will ensure that money already allocated for tuberculosis prevention and treatment goes to the countries and communities hit hardest by this deadly disease. We only need the House to pass the bill to send it to the President’s desk (the Senate already passed it). If not, we will have to start over in the new Congress. Push your representatives to support the End TB Now Act and push House leaders to bring it to a vote. Contact their offices directly and also submit letters to the editors urging them to act now.
