Senate rejects CTC expansion, fight for tax justice continues

H.R. 7024, the bipartisan Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act, failed to pass in the Senate. Tax justice allies look to new opportunities to expand the Child Tax Credit.

Washington, DC, August 1, 2024—Today, in a final vote of 48-44, the Senate did not pass the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act. This legislation would have expanded the Child Tax Credit (CTC) to reach 16 million kids from working families negotiating poverty. RESULTS is deeply disappointed in this outcome. This defeat in the Senate comes after the same bill passed in January in the House of Representatives with resounding bipartisan support.

“RESULTS is disheartened that the Senate could not muster the bipartisan support for this critical legislation. This CTC expansion would have provided vital economic tools to millions of families experiencing the daily trauma of poverty,” said RESULTS Executive Director, Joanne Carter.

“While we are dismayed that the CTC expansion failed, we are not discouraged. Even now, we are working with our network and congressional allies. We will push for a robust CTC expansion in the 2025 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act negotiation if not sooner,” said Carter. RESULTS applauds and thanks its partners and the bipartisan members of Congress who supported H.R. 7024. Families affected by poverty have clearly stated: the Child Tax Credit works. RESULTS advocates will continue to fight for economic justice in the tax code. A Child Tax Credit that reaches families with the lowest incomes remains a top priority.
