RESULTS supports congressional Gavi resolutions, urges bold U.S. commitment
Representatives Kean (R-NJ), Amo (D-RI), Salazar (R-FL), and Jacobs (D-CA) lead the House resolution for U.S. support of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance providing resources for countries to scale-up access to life-saving vaccines.
Washington, DC, June 11, 2024—Today a bipartisan group of House leaders introduced a resolution endorsing strong, ongoing U.S. support for lifesaving vaccines for countries deeply affected by poverty through Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. The House resolution, led by Reps. Kean (R-NJ), Amo (D-RI), Salazar (R-FL), and Jacobs (D-CA), follows a similar resolution introduced in the Senate last month by Senators Wicker (R-MS) and Cardin (D-MD).
Since its inception, Gavi has supported low-income countries to immunize over one billion children and helped prevent 17.3 million child deaths from vaccine-preventable diseases worldwide.
“RESULTS thanks Reps. Kean, Amo, Salazar, and Jacobs, and Senators Wicker and Cardin for these Gavi resolutions to support increased U.S. investments in lifesaving vaccines globally,” said RESULTS Executive Director, Joanne Carter.
“Now, the administration should use this political momentum to make an early pledge of no less than $1.4 billion over four years to unlock other donor support and propel country-led vaccine efforts that will protect millions of children from diseases like pneumonia, deadly diarrhea, and now, malaria. A bold U.S. pledge to Gavi will save millions of lives, combat preventable diseases that trap people in cycles of poverty, and support primary health systems that can reach everyone and help prevent the next pandemic,” continued Carter.
Heads of State from around the world will kick off the process to replenish Gavi’s funds later this month at an event in France. RESULTS calls on the U.S. government to make an early, bold funding pledge of at least $1.4 billion over four years, and support the resolution, ensuring the U.S. does its part to stop millions of unnecessary deaths while helping to protect against future pandemics.
